Stephanie Carlin Appointed as Business Operations Director at McLaren F1

McLaren has confirmed that Stephanie Carlin will be joining the team as Formula 1 Business Operations Director for the upcoming 2024 F1 season.

Stephanie Carlin, previously serving as the team principal for both Rodin Carlin’s Formula 3 and F1 Academy Teams and holding a similar position at Team X44 in Extreme E, is set to manage a variety of tasks to bolster McLaren’s Formula 1 operations.

In her new role, she will also be involved with the efforts of McLaren in the 2024 F1 Academy season, starting her tenure in January and reporting directly to McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella.

Recognised in the international motor racing community, Carlin has diverse experience across numerous championships, ultimately progressing to a senior management position.

Her career began in press and marketing, and in 2011, she ascended to the role of commercial manager at Carlin under the leadership of her husband, Trevor Carlin.

In May 2022, Carlin advanced to the deputy team principal role, taking charge of the team’s participation in various racing series.

This role continued the following year after Carlin partnered with the New Zealand car manufacturer Rodin.

During the last year, Carlin’s team competed in several series, including British F4, FIA F3, FIA F2, British GB3, and for the first time, in the F1 Academy and Spanish F4.

Carlin tweeted: “We can confirm that Stephanie will be leaving us next month as she takes on a new role at McLaren. Stephanie’s a leading woman in motorsport & while we are all understandably sad to see her leave, we are so proud of her & can’t wait to see her smash it in her new role.”

Carlin Racing, one of the most accomplished teams outside Formula 1, boasts an impressive record with over 470 race wins and 30 championships since 1999 in various series including F4, F3, F2, Indy Lights, IndyCar, ELMS, and the Asian Le Mans Series. The team has been instrumental in advancing over 30 drivers to Formula 1.

Stephanie Carlin’s transition to McLaren comes as the Formula 1 team seeks to capitalize on its strong performance at the end of the 2023 season.

Initially struggling, McLaren’s turnaround was marked by significant improvements to its MCL60 car. This revamp propelled drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to consistently challenge the dominant Red Bull team, culminating in a fourth-place finish in the constructors’ championship.

Norris, in particular, has a notable history with Carlin, having achieved considerable success in junior categories with the team. He raced for two years in F3 under Carlin, claiming victories in British F3 in 2016 and winning the 2017 FIA European F3 championship. He continued his ascent with Carlin, securing second place in the F2 championship in 2018.
