The Alfa Special was a unique, home-built Formula One car created in 1962 by South African racer and engineer Peter de Klerk. Built specifically for the South African Formula One Championship, the car embodied the resourceful spirit of local motorsport in the early 1960s.
At its heart was a 1.5-litre Alfa Romeo Giulietta inline-four engine, mounted in a bespoke single-seater chassis designed and assembled by de Klerk himself. The result was a distinctive privateer machine that became known simply as the “Alfa Special.”
Although built primarily for domestic competition, the car would briefly step onto the world stage, appearing in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix and several additional international events.
A South African Formula One contender
During the early 1960s, South Africa had a vibrant domestic Formula One championship, which allowed local drivers and constructors to compete with machinery that met international Formula One regulations.
Seeing an opportunity to compete at the highest level without relying on expensive European manufacturers, de Klerk designed and constructed his own racing car. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta engine — well known for its reliability and performance in sports cars — provided a strong and accessible powerplant for the project.
The resulting Alfa Special was a classic privateer special, combining ingenuity, mechanical skill and determination. While it lacked the resources and development of factory-backed teams, it proved capable of competing both locally and occasionally on the global stage.
Formula One World Championship appearances
Despite being designed primarily for domestic racing, the Alfa Special appeared in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, both held in South Africa.
1963 South African Grand Prix
The car made its World Championship debut at the 1963 South African Grand Prix. Competing against established European teams and far more advanced cars, the Alfa Special faced a daunting challenge.
Unfortunately, its first outing ended in retirement, preventing the team from seeing the chequered flag in its debut championship appearance.
1965 South African Grand Prix
The Alfa Special returned to the World Championship grid two years later at the 1965 South African Grand Prix.
This time, the car managed to complete the race, finishing 10th overall. While it did not score points, simply finishing against the international field was considered a respectable achievement for a privately built machine.
Non-championship racing success
Outside the World Championship, the Alfa Special was a regular competitor in non-championship Grands Prix and regional events.
Across five non-championship Formula One races, the car achieved its greatest moment at the 1963 Rand Grand Prix, where it scored an impressive podium finish. For a locally built privateer car competing against more established teams, this result was a notable highlight.
Even with only two World Championship starts, the Alfa Special remains a memorable example of the era when Formula One grids were still open to ambitious privateers willing to build their own path into the sport.
