Lando Norris ended Friday at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix exactly where he started it: on top. The McLaren driver, chasing down team-mate Oscar Piastri in the 2025 F1 World Championship, backed up his FP1 benchmark with the fastest lap in Free Practice 2 — a 1:09.890 on soft tyres — to underline his strong form at Zandvoort.

What To Know?
  • Norris fastest in FP2 on 1:09.890, leading Alonso (+0.087s) and Piastri (+0.089s).
  • Red flags for Stroll (Turn 3 crash) and Albon (Turn 1 off).
  • Verstappen P5, Hamilton spun again; Leclerc P9, Colapinto P10.

The hour-long session was anything but straightforward, interrupted by two red flags following heavy crashes for Lance Stroll and Alex Albon. Stroll lost control at the steeply banked Turn 3, his Aston Martin hitting the barriers, before the Canadian thankfully confirmed he was unhurt. Later, Albon became the second casualty of the day, beaching his Williams in the Turn 1 gravel after clipping the wall and breaking his front wing.

Before the stoppages, Norris had already demonstrated his authority, becoming the first man under 1m12s and later lowering the benchmark into the 1m09s. Fernando Alonso, who had earlier fumed over being held up by Kimi Antonelli, responded with a 1:09.977, but Norris immediately answered back, finishing 0.087s quicker. Piastri slotted into third, just 0.089s off his team-mate, though he will face investigation after a minor pit lane scrape with George Russell’s Mercedes. Russell himself finished fourth, while Max Verstappen had to settle for fifth, over half a second adrift of Norris on home soil.

Behind them, Lewis Hamilton endured another spin — his second of the day — on his way to seventh, with Yuki Tsunoda eighth for Red Bull, Charles Leclerc ninth for Ferrari, and Alpine rookie Franco Colapinto completing the top 10. Nico Hülkenberg, who briefly topped the times on softs mid-session, wound up 10th before slipping to 11th. Oliver Bearman impressed early with a stint at the top of the leaderboard, ending 11th ahead of Antonelli, who recovered from his FP1 crash to log steady mileage.

Gabriel Bortoleto finished 13th for Kick Sauber, just ahead of Liam Lawson, Esteban Ocon, and Carlos Sainz — the Williams man unable to build on his brief spell near the sharp end as the track evolved. With Albon and Stroll sidelined, Pierre Gasly could only manage 18th, while Isack Hadjar was classified without a time after his Racing Bulls developed a technical issue before he could complete a lap.

As the sun broke through the coastal clouds late in the session, long-run simulations took over, but the order remained unchanged. That left Norris to claim a clean sweep of Friday practice, setting the tone for a pivotal weekend where McLaren’s title fight against Red Bull — and Verstappen’s orange army — will be under the microscope.
