Born in Liberec, Enge began racing at 16, entering the Ford Fiesta Cup with a car he purchased himself. He steadily progressed through the junior ranks, including stints in Formula 3 and International Formula 3000.
Formula One Career
Prost Grand Prix: 2001
Enge made his Formula One debut at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix, replacing the injured Luciano Burti at the Prost team following Burti’s heavy crash in Belgium. Enge participated in the final three races of the 2001 season, becoming the first and only Czech driver to compete in the sport.
His performances were solid for a rookie in an uncompetitive car. He drove at Monza, Indianapolis, and Suzuka, but did not score any championship points.
Enge’s F1 opportunity came thanks to sponsorship from Coca-Cola’s Czech subsidiary, which had also backed his Formula 3000 campaign with Nordic Racing earlier that year. He had finished third overall in the 2001 F3000 championship, narrowly missing out on the title due to missing the final round.
Post-Formula One
Enge left Formula One after the Prost team folded ahead of the 2002 season. He continued in Formula 3000, initially winning the 2002 title, but was stripped of the championship after testing positive for marijuana, a violation of FIA regulations.
In subsequent years, Enge raced in a variety of series, including:
- Indy Racing League (IRL) in 2005 for Panther Racing, nearly winning at Sonoma
- A1 Grand Prix representing Team Czech Republic
- Multiple appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans driving for Prodrive, including in Ferrari and Aston Martin machinery
- American Le Mans Series (ALMS) with Aston Martin Racing and later Petersen/White Lightning Ferrari
