Born in Stamford, Connecticut, Arnold came from the generation of post-war racers who helped shape the golden era of Championship Car racing in the United States. Like many drivers of the time, he built his path into racing on persistence, mechanical know-how, and a willingness to compete wherever opportunities arose.

USAC Championship Car Career

Arnold competed sporadically in the USAC Championship Car series between 1959 and 1968, making 11 starts in total.

Although his appearances were relatively limited, Arnold proved he could hold his own in a fiercely competitive era that featured legendary names and notoriously dangerous machinery. Championship Car racing in the late 1950s and 1960s demanded enormous bravery, with drivers regularly competing on high-speed ovals where mechanical failures and serious accidents were ever-present risks.

Arnold’s career included three top-ten finishes.

Indianapolis 500 Appearance

One of the defining moments of Arnold’s career came in 1959 when he competed in the Indianapolis 500, the most prestigious and demanding race in American motorsport.

For Arnold, appearing at Indianapolis was the pinnacle of his Championship Car career and placed him among an elite group of drivers who successfully reached the starting field for the iconic event.

Best Career Finish

Arnold’s strongest Championship Car result also came in 1959, when he finished fifth at Trenton Speedway. The performance stood as the best finish of his career.

Later Life and Legacy

After stepping away from Championship Car competition, Arnold largely remained out of the national spotlight.

He passed away on 4 September 1997 in Santa Ana, California, at the age of 71.
