2027 F1 World Championship

The 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship, which the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) recognises as the pinnacle of open-wheel racing, will see drivers and teams compete in 24 Grands Prix for the World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ Championship titles.

The 2027 season follows the major regulatory overhaul introduced in 2026, which brought in a new power unit formula and the implementation of active aerodynamics. Audi will be in its second season as a full factory team, having entered the sport in 2026 after acquiring Sauber. The team will continue to develop and run its own power units in-house.

Cadillac also completed its first season in Formula One, having joined the grid in 2026 as the eleventh team. Powered by Ferrari engines, Cadillac were the sport’s first team expansion since Haas joined in 2016.

Honda will maintain its engine supply relationship with Aston Martin through its Honda Racing Corporation division, after ending its long-standing partnership with Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Ford looks to continue its return to the sport by supplying power unit support to both Red Bull Racing and the Racing Bulls, in collaboration with Red Bull Powertrains.

As in 2026, Renault remains absent from engine supply, continuing into 2027, a break in its long-running involvement since 1988. Alpine, no longer using Renault power, will have completed its first season running as a Mercedes customer team in 2026.

Season

As the 78th running of the Formula 1 World Championship, the 2027 F1 season will be the second year under the FIA’s overhauled chassis and power unit regulations, which were first introduced in 2026.

Technical regulations

Formula 1’s 2027 power unit rules will shift the balance towards the combustion engine. Its maximum output will rise from 400 kW to 420 kW, supported by a 5% increase in permitted fuel flow. Meanwhile, the MGU-K’s maximum electrical output will fall from 350 kW to 300 kW, although 350 kW will remain available in Overtake Mode.

These adjustments will change the combustion-to-electric power split from approximately 53:47 to 58:42, with a further move to 60:40 scheduled for 2028. Maximum energy-harvesting power will also increase from 350 kW to 375 kW. Together, the revisions aim to make electrical energy easier to manage and reduce the need for lift-and-coast and “super clipping” on long straights.

The F1 Commission has also agreed to remove gearbox homologation requirements for 2027. This would give suppliers greater freedom to develop their gearboxes, subject to the remaining technical rules and final World Motor Sport Council approval.

Sporting regulations

To accommodate the higher fuel flow without forcing teams to enlarge fuel tanks or substantially redesign chassis carried over from 2026, the standard Grand Prix distance is set to fall from 305 km (190 miles) to 290 km (180 miles). Monaco will retain its separate, shorter race distance. At other circuits, the reduction is expected to mean around two or three fewer laps.

The rules for interrupted races are also set to change. A fixed finishing deadline will replace the current three-hour window that includes stoppages, while the two-hour limit on actual racing will remain. The intention is to improve the chances of completing the scheduled distance when weather or other disruptions delay proceedings.

There will also be greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions following interruptions. These sporting changes were agreed by the F1 Commission in September 2026 and remain subject to World Motor Sport Council approval.

2027 F1 Pre-Season Testing

It was announced on 2 June 2026 that an extra day of pre-season testing will be added to pre-season in 2027.

After the pre-season schedule was expanded to 11 test days in 2026 to account for the introduction of all-new cars and engines, the programme was set to revert to the familiar three days for the second year of the regulations.

But that has now been increased slightly to four days following approval of a proposal at that days F1 Commission meeting.

Aside from 2022 and 2026, when new regulations were introduced, pre-season testing has run to three days in Bahrain since 2021.

The F1 Commission, which comprises the FIA, F1, and all 11 teams, also agreed on tweaks to the 2027 regulations regarding aerodynamic and bodywork components, as well as the Testing of Previous Cars.

All rule changes go to the World Motor Sport Council for rubber-stamping.

F1 Live

On 4 September 2026, Formula One’s second F1 Live event following F1 75 Live in 2025 was announced ahead of pre-season testing, to be held on 18 February 2027 in Milan.

2027 F1 Entries Drivers and Teams

The complete driver line-up for the 2027 Formula 1 season is still pending confirmation, though several teams have already secured their line-ups, and multiple drivers are under existing contracts.

As in 2026, in total, 22 drivers will drive for 11 teams. While some seats remain unconfirmed, the 2027 grid is almost complete.

2027 Formula 1 Race Calendar

A total of 24 races were announced for the 2027 season, with some notable changes from 2026. The Dutch Grand Prix would not feature on the 2027 roster, as organisers had previously announced that 2026 would mark its final running.

On 16 December 2025, Formula 1 confirmed a return to Portugal for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, with the Algarve International Circuit at Portimão scheduled to appear on the calendar. The Portuguese Grand Prix effectively replaced the Dutch GP at Zandvoort, which was removed from the schedule after 2026.

Portimão last hosted F1 races in 2020 and 2021, during the COVID-impacted seasons, known for its challenging layout and elevation changes. The circuit also holds historical significance, having hosted Lewis Hamilton’s then-record-breaking 92nd career victory in 2021.

On 24 April 2026, it was announced that the Turkish Grand Prix would return to Formula 1 in 2027 after Istanbul Park signed a new five-year deal running through 2031.

There are changes elsewhere in Europe, too. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya enters a rotation with Spa-Francorchamps. Barcelona will host in even-numbered years from 2028, with the Belgian Grand Prix taking the odd-numbered years from 2027.

2027 F1 Sprint Race Calendar

On September 16, 2026, F1 announced that it would increase the number of Sprint weekends from six to 10 in 2027 and, in a surprise move, bring the format to Monaco for the first time. F1 highlighted the prospect of two qualifying sessions on the Monte Carlo street circuit as a particular attraction for fans.

Australia, Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar and Abu Dhabi complete the Sprint line-up alongside Bahrain and Monaco.
