Set on the outskirts of Istanbul in the Tuzla district, the Turkish Grand Prix quickly earned a reputation as one of the most demanding modern Formula 1 events. Held at the sweeping, technical Istanbul Park circuit, the race combined high-speed corners with relentless lateral forces, most notably through the daunting Turn 8.
Although its original stint on the calendar lasted from 2005 to 2011, the event returned for two dramatic pandemic-era seasons in 2020 and 2021. Across those nine races, a select group of drivers mastered the unique challenges of this Tilke-designed venue.

Turkish Grand Prix Winners: 2005 to 2011
The inaugural event in 2005 immediately showcased the circuit’s demanding nature. Victory went to Kimi Räikkönen, whose measured drive for McLaren proved decisive on a weekend where many were caught out by the flowing layout. His triumph came during an intense championship fight with Fernando Alonso, who finished second and limited the damage to points.
From 2006 onward, Istanbul Park became synonymous with one man. Felipe Massa claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory at the track in 2006 for Scuderia Ferrari, leading confidently from pole position. He returned in 2007 and again in 2008 to repeat the feat, each time converting pole into victory. His three consecutive wins remain one of the most impressive venue streaks in modern Formula 1 history and established him as the most successful driver ever at the Turkish Grand Prix.
The competitive order shifted in 2009 when Jenson Button triumphed for Brawn GP. Button took control early and managed the race expertly, reinforcing his command of a remarkable championship campaign.
In 2010, the race produced one of its most memorable moments. A collision between Red Bull teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber while disputing the lead dramatically altered the outcome. Capitalising on the incident, Lewis Hamilton secured victory for McLaren after holding off pressure from his teammate in the closing stages.
The final race of Turkey’s original spell on the calendar in 2011 saw Vettel return to the top step, this time firmly in control for Red Bull Racing. A strategically intense contest featuring multiple pit stops and overtakes ended with Vettel extending his dominance during a championship-winning season.

Turkish Grand Prix Winners: 2020 to 2021
After nearly a decade away, the Turkish Grand Prix returned in 2020 under extraordinary global circumstances. A newly resurfaced track, combined with heavy rain, created treacherous grip levels throughout the weekend. Starting from sixth on the grid, Hamilton produced one of the standout drives of his career for Mercedes. Judging the evolving conditions perfectly, he claimed victory and secured his seventh World Championship, equalling the record set by Michael Schumacher.
The event returned once more in 2021, again producing mixed conditions that demanded precision and tyre management. This time it was Valtteri Bottas who controlled proceedings from pole position. Delivering a composed and authoritative performance for Mercedes, Bottas ensured that Istanbul Park’s most recent chapter ended with a measured and convincing victory.
Legacy
From Räikkönen’s breakthrough win to Massa’s extraordinary hat-trick, and from Button’s championship charge to Hamilton’s title-clinching masterclass, the Turkish Grand Prix consistently rewarded bravery, technical skill and strategic discipline. Though its future remains uncertain, its roll of honour reflects some of the most compelling stories of modern Formula 1.
