Serafini began his competitive career in 1928 aboard a Benelli 175cc motorcycle and quickly established himself as one of Italy’s leading riders. His greatest success on two wheels came in 1939 when he won the prestigious 500cc European Championship riding for Gilera. Victories in the German, Swedish and Ulster Grands Prix secured the title and cemented his reputation among the elite motorcycle racers of his era.

Following the Second World War, Serafini turned his attention to car racing. Switching to single-seaters in 1947, he adapted quickly and became a respected competitor in Italian and international events. His performances included a runner-up finish in the 1950 Mille Miglia, one of the world’s most demanding road races, as well as appearances in several non-championship Formula One contests.

His moment in Formula One came at the 1950 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he drove for Ferrari in what would become his only World Championship start. Sharing the car with Alberto Ascari, Serafini helped secure a second-place finish. Under the regulations of the time, the points for the position were split between the two drivers, leaving Serafini with half of the six points awarded for second place.

That single appearance produced one of Formula One’s most unusual statistical records. Because he finished on the podium in the only World Championship Grand Prix he ever entered, Serafini remains the only driver in Formula One history to have achieved a podium finish in every World Championship race of their career, albeit from a single start.

His racing career was interrupted in 1951 when he suffered serious injuries during the Mille Miglia. The accident required multiple operations and ultimately brought an end to his full-time competition career. Nevertheless, Serafini’s determination saw him return to action in 1954 for the Brescia–Rome–Brescia event, where he finished seventh overall and claimed victory in the GT class.

Remembered as both a European motorcycle champion and a Formula One podium finisher, Dorino Serafini enjoyed a career unlike any other. His achievements across multiple disciplines and his unique place in the Formula One record books ensure his legacy remains one of the most distinctive in motorsport history.

Serafini passed away on 5 July 2000 at the age of 90.
