Early life and career
Ahrens was the son of Kurt Ahrens Sr., and the two even competed against each other for several years. He began racing in 1958 in Formula 3 with a Cooper-Norton and quickly rose through the ranks.
He achieved early success by winning the German Formula Junior Championship in both 1961 and 1963, establishing himself as one of the leading young drivers in Germany.
Formula 2 and Formula One appearances
Ahrens progressed to Formula 2, where he became a regular front-runner. At the time, Formula 2 cars were permitted to compete in the German Grand Prix due to the length and demands of circuits such as the Nürburgring.
He frequently drove Brabham cars for the Caltex Racing Team and was invited to drive a Brabham-Repco Formula One car in the wet 1968 German Grand Prix. He was also present at the death of Jim Clark at Hockenheimring, an event that deeply affected the racing community.
Sports car success
In 1968, Ahrens joined the Porsche factory team, marking the most successful phase of his career. He achieved a major victory at the 1000 km of Österreichring alongside Jo Siffert.
He also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1969 and 1970, driving the Porsche 917 “long tail,” although both attempts ended in retirement. In 1970, he partnered Vic Elford to win the 1000 km Nürburgring in a Porsche 908.
Retirement
Ahrens retired from racing at the end of 1970, notably claiming he had never crashed during a race. However, he did survive a serious high-speed testing accident earlier that year at Ehra-Lessien, when his Porsche 917 broke apart after going under a barrier.
