Before reaching Formula One, Bonomi had already established himself as one of Argentina’s leading sports car competitors. He won sports car championships in 1952 and 1953, performances that earned him a place in the Argentine squad that travelled to Europe to compete internationally.

His Formula One opportunity came with Scuderia Centro Sud, driving a Cooper in the 1960 Argentine Grand Prix. It proved to be his only appearance at the sport’s highest level, making Bonomi one of the many talented South American drivers of the era whose Grand Prix career was far shorter than their wider racing record suggested.

Away from the circuit, Bonomi led an equally varied life. He worked as a landowner and also became involved in local politics, adding public service to a résumé that had already taken him from Argentine sports car champion to the Formula One grid.
