Formula One Career
Minardi: 1996–1997
Marques made his Formula One debut in 1996 with Minardi. At the time, the team’s financial instability led to frequent driver changes. Marques shared the seat with several drivers, including Giancarlo Fisichella, Pedro Lamy, and Jarno Trulli. His drives were inconsistent, with limited opportunities and little time to develop due to Minardi’s preference for drivers who could bring sponsorship money. He raced a partial season in both 1996 and 1997 but was not kept for 1998.
Minardi: 2001
After a stint in Champ Car, Marques returned to Formula One in 2001, once again with Minardi. The team had just been acquired by Paul Stoddart and featured a promising rookie teammate: Fernando Alonso. Marques managed two ninth-place finishes, which were the best results for Minardi that season. However, he was generally outpaced by Alonso in both qualifying and race pace.
Marques was driving under a conditional agreement, wherein he could be replaced by a better-funded driver at any time. That happened late in the season, when Alex Yoong brought substantial sponsorship to the team and took over the race seat for the final three rounds. Marques publicly supported the decision, acknowledging the financial need for the team.
Despite being retained as Minardi’s test and reserve driver in 2002, he was overlooked when Yoong was temporarily dropped mid-season. The team chose Anthony Davidson instead, and Justin Wilson was also considered ahead of Marques, effectively ending his Formula One career.
Post-F1 Career
Following Formula One, Marques returned to race in Champ Car (with a best finish of 9th for Penske in 1999 and 11th for Dale Coyne Racing in later years). From 2005 onwards, he focused on racing in the Brazilian touring car series, including TC2000 and Stock Car Brasil.
In recent years, Marques has also gained recognition as an auto customiser and automotive entrepreneur in Brazil.
