Lando Norris continued to lead McLaren’s charge in Spielberg, topping the timesheets in final practice ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen as the field prepared for Qualifying at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix.
What To Know?
- Norris tops again: Lando Norris leads FP3 with a 1:04.324, ahead of Piastri and Verstappen.
- Track limits drama: Multiple offs at Turn 1 and Turn 9, with gravel trips from Piastri, Hadjar, and others.
- McLaren looking sharp: Back-to-back sessions topped by Norris underline McLaren’s threat heading into Qualifying.
Clocking a 1:04.324 on soft tyres, Norris looked razor-sharp in a session riddled with off-track moments, gravel trips, and relentless battles with track limits. With the 2025 F1 World Championship finely poised, McLaren’s form through all three practice sessions sends a strong message—especially with Norris going quickest in both FP2 and FP3.

Verstappen, still working without regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, kicked things off with a 1:06.131 on hards but struggled to find rhythm, reporting a “snappy” feel on throttle.
Track limits quickly became a storyline, with Turn 1 and Turn 9 catching out several—including both Ferraris, Norris himself, and even rookie Franco Colapinto. Piastri’s push nearly backfired with a brush through the gravel at Turn 9, while Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar earned the only yellow flag of the session after a wild spin at Turn 10 that he somehow recovered from with minimal drama—and a sheepish apology.
While Norris couldn’t improve late on after running wide again, his earlier lap remained unbeaten. Piastri closed to within 0.113s, with Verstappen three-tenths back in P3. Ferrari showed promise with Leclerc and Hamilton (in the SF-25) rounding out the top five, while Russell narrowly edged his teammate by 0.035s. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll continued his strong return to form with P7, just ahead of Yuki Tsunoda and Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
With McLaren looking ominously fast, Ferrari finding rhythm, and Verstappen still ironing out car handling issues, FP3 set the stage for an unpredictable Qualifying hour at 16:00 local time.
