Oscar Piastri stamped his authority on the Spanish Grand Prix weekend by topping second practice with a clinical 1:12.760 lap, reaffirming his status as championship leader in the 2025 F1 World Championship. As temperatures soared and the soft-tyre runs came into play, the McLaren driver pulled nearly three-tenths clear of Mercedes’ George Russell, with Max Verstappen a further whisker behind in third. It was a statement session for Piastri, who responded to team-mate Lando Norris’ FP1 benchmark with pace and poise as McLaren continued to look like the team to beat in Barcelona.

What To Know?
  • Piastri on Top: Oscar Piastri set the fastest time of FP2 with a 1:12.760, nearly three-tenths ahead of George Russell and Max Verstappen.
  • McLaren vs Mercedes & Red Bull: McLaren continued to impress, with Norris narrowly behind Verstappen as the top four closed up on soft-tyre runs.
  • Traffic & Tension: Frustrations flared with Alonso and Hadjar complaining about traffic, while Bearman’s Turn 3 spin disrupted his session.

The hour-long session started at 17:00 local time under humid, sun-soaked skies at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Esteban Ocon returned to the cockpit after sitting out FP1 for Ryo Hirakawa, and Franco Colapinto was back on track following a hydraulic fix on his Alpine. All 20 drivers made early appearances, with medium C2s the starting tyre of choice. Norris again set the early pace, while rookie Ollie Bearman had a scare with a spin at Turn 3 — managing to keep the Haas out of the barriers but losing crucial running time.

Traffic became a talking point, as Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar fumed over being held up, and Fernando Alonso sarcastically dubbed Lewis Hamilton “the hero of the day” after the Ferrari appeared to block his flying lap. Russell initially led the times with a 1:13.046, briefly heading a Mercedes 1-2 as the Silver Arrows sought redemption following a difficult Monaco outing. But once soft-tyre simulations began, the order rapidly reshuffled.

In a curious statistical quirk, both Norris and Verstappen logged identical lap times of 1:13.070, with the Red Bull listed ahead for setting the time first. That left them fighting over third, as Piastri surged to the top with his standout lap — a time that would remain unbeaten even as drivers switched focus to long-run data collection. Ferrari’s form looked more uncertain, with Charles Leclerc sliding wide on his flyer and Hamilton finishing outside the top 10 in P11.

Behind the leading quartet of Piastri, Russell, Verstappen, and Norris, Leclerc slotted into fifth ahead of Mercedes junior Kimi Antonelli in sixth and Alonso in seventh for Aston Martin. Pierre Gasly continued his quietly strong Friday for Alpine in eighth, while Racing Bulls’ duo Hadjar and Liam Lawson rounded out the top 10.

Hamilton’s P11 finish was followed by Nico Hülkenberg (P12), Yuki Tsunoda (P13), and the Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon in 14th and 15th, respectively. Lance Stroll, Gabriel Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon, Bearman, and Colapinto completed the field in a session that showcased pace and a preview of the potential fireworks to come on Saturday’s qualifying.

With both McLarens topping a session each for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, so far, and Red Bull and Mercedes close behind, FP2 offered a thrilling glimpse of the balance of power heading into the business end of the weekend — and potentially, the heart of the 2025 F1 World Championship battle.
