Born in 1920, Thiele’s early adulthood was shaped by the turmoil of the Second World War. During the conflict, he served as a captain within the Office of Strategic Services-linked network supporting Italian anti-fascist partisans. Operating in one of the most dangerous periods of modern European history, he played a role in the resistance movement fighting against fascist forces and occupation.
It was during these wartime years that he met Walkiria Terradura, a fellow resistance fighter who would later be awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valour for her courage and service. Their shared experiences forged a lasting bond, and the pair married after the war. They spent a brief period living in the United States before eventually returning to Italy, where Thiele would pursue his growing passion for motorsport.
Following the war, Thiele became involved with the rapidly expanding Italian racing industry and worked as a test driver for Abarth. In this role he combined driving skill with technical expertise, helping to develop and evaluate competition machinery at a time when manufacturers were increasingly using endurance records and competition success to demonstrate engineering excellence.
One of the highlights of his career came in 1955 when he joined an Abarth team attempting endurance and distance records at the famous Monza circuit. The group covered 3,743.642 kilometres at an average speed of 155.985 km/h, an impressive achievement that showcased both the reliability and performance of the cars. The success was followed just a week later by another remarkable record-breaking effort. With journalists present and even participating in the driving duties, the team established new benchmarks over distances and durations including 500 kilometres, 500 miles, 1,000 kilometres, 48 hours and 72 hours.
While much of Thiele’s racing career was devoted to sports cars and endurance competition, he also briefly stepped onto the Formula One World Championship stage. He made his sole Grand Prix appearance on 4 September 1960, competing against many of the leading drivers of the era. Although he did not score championship points, his participation placed him among the select group of drivers who reached motorsport’s highest level.
Despite his Formula One appearance, it was sports car racing that remained the focus of his competitive career.
Alfonso Thiele passed away on 15 July 1986. His story remains one of the more distinctive in motor racing history—a man who served his country during wartime, helped build Italy’s post-war motorsport reputation and competed at the highest levels of international racing. From resistance fighter to record breaker and Grand Prix driver, Thiele’s life reflected a remarkable blend of courage, determination and technical expertise.
