A Star of South American Racing

Fontes Bayardo made his name during the golden era of Argentine Formula Libre, one of South America’s most competitive racing categories. At the time, the series was gradually transitioning towards full Formula One regulations, attracting talented drivers and increasingly sophisticated machinery.

Among his most memorable achievements was victory in the inaugural race held at Montevideo’s newly opened El Pinar circuit in October 1956. Driving a distinctive Maserati 4CLT fitted with a powerful Chevrolet V8 engine, Fontes Bayardo mastered the challenging conditions to secure a landmark win on home soil.

He repeated the feat internationally the following year when he claimed victory at Interlagos in Brazil in November 1957, once again behind the wheel of his Chevrolet-powered Maserati. These successes cemented his reputation as one of the leading drivers in the region and demonstrated his ability to compete against some of South America’s finest racers.

Chasing the Grand Prix Dream

In 1959, Fontes Bayardo took the ambitious step of travelling to Europe in pursuit of Formula One competition. He joined the respected Italian privateer outfit Scuderia Centro Sud and entered the French Grand Prix, driving a Maserati 250F that, while legendary, was already considered outdated compared to the latest Grand Prix cars.

Despite his determination, the challenge proved difficult. He was unable to record a qualifying time and did not make the starting grid for the race.

Following his European campaign, Fontes Bayardo returned to South America, where he continued competing in Formula Libre events and endurance races.

Business Career and Community Leadership

Away from the racetrack, Fontes Bayardo enjoyed considerable success in business. During the 1960s, he became a General Motors concessionaire serving the regions of Pan de Azúcar, San Carlos and Maldonado.

He also played a role in local vehicle manufacturing, serving as a director of a company that produced Opel-based pick-up trucks in Pan de Azúcar under the Marina brand.

Later in his career, he worked with a production agency associated with Banco de Seguros del Estado (BSE), one of Uruguay’s leading state-owned insurance institutions.

Death

Asdrúbal Fontes Bayardo passed away at his home in Montevideo on 9 July 2006.

His contribution to the sport continues to be recognised today. The Piriápolis street circuit bears his name in honour of his achievements.

The family’s racing tradition also lives on through his nephew, Cyro Fontes, who continues to compete in touring car championships across Uruguay and Argentina.
