Before turning to four wheels, Andersson competed in motocross. He later switched to car racing and became a long-serving Formula Three privateer, spending almost a decade competing largely on his own terms before earning his opportunity at the highest level.

Formula Three

Andersson’s persistence eventually produced significant success.

In 1974, he won the Swedish Formula Three Championship, establishing himself as one of his country’s leading single-seater drivers.

He followed that with victory in the 1975 European Formula Three Championship race at Monaco, one of the most prestigious Formula Three events on the calendar.

Andersson remained a front-runner the following season, adding another four race victories to his record.

After years spent fighting his way through Formula Three as a privateer, those performances finally opened the door to Formula One.

Formula One

Andersson made the step into Formula One in 1976 with Surtees.

His Grand Prix career continued into 1977, when he also appeared for BRM. Neither opportunity provided the machinery or circumstances needed to establish a long-term Formula One career, and his time at the top level proved brief.

Even so, reaching Formula One completed an unusual journey. Andersson had gone from motocross to nearly a decade of privateer Formula Three racing, then championship success and finally a place on the Grand Prix grid.

His Formula One record may have been modest, but his route there was anything but – built on years of persistence before his breakthrough successes in Swedish and European Formula Three.
