Championship background
Niki Lauda led the championship on 58 points at the time of this meeting, ahead of James Hunt on 47. The British result was still under appeal. Hunt’s later disqualification changed the points retrospectively; the final settled totals appear in the standings below.
Race entries
Ferrari entered Regazzoni as Lauda continued his recovery. Ickx joined Ensign, Conny Andersson made his championship debut in Lunger’s Surtees and Stommelen drove Edwards’ Hesketh. Boy Hayje also made his first championship appearance in a Penske, while Perkins returned with Boro. Shadow introduced its DN8 for Pryce and Mass tried McLaren’s new M26.
Friday morning timed practice
A sudden downpour interrupted the opening laps, sending almost everyone back to the pits. Regazzoni ventured out on wet tyres before the sunshine returned and the surface dried rapidly. Watson then set the pace ahead of Laffite and Hunt. Reutemann suffered an engine failure and switched Brabhams, while Pryce quickly settled into the new Shadow.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Hunt moved ahead of Watson in warm, dry conditions. Nilsson stopped with electrical trouble, and Pesenti-Rossi spun nearby while Lotus mechanics worked on the stranded car. A broken exhaust delayed Pryce, while Ickx began to show the Ensign’s potential after a quieter morning. Brambilla joined the fastest group as the field made full use of the improved weather.
Saturday final qualifying
The organisers moved final qualifying to the morning and the untimed session to the afternoon. Peterson seized pole in a fiercely contested hour, with Hunt alongside and Pryce third. Merzario and Perkins spun at Tarzan but continued, while Andretti favoured the older of his available Lotus chassis. Pesenti-Rossi was the sole driver to miss the 26-car grid.

Saturday untimed practice
With the grid settled, the teams concentrated on full-tank running, tyre preparation and checks after engine changes. Peterson collided with Perkins while driving his spare March; the Boro escaped serious damage, but the March needed recovery. Mass went into the catch fencing after a driveshaft joint failed and compromised the M26’s braking, then finished his running in a spare M23.
Sunday warm-up
Local noise restrictions kept the circuit quiet until the early afternoon. During the 15-minute warm-up, Peterson’s March developed a misfire that an ignition-unit change appeared to cure. Brabham filled its tanks carefully, concerned about the Alfa Romeo engines’ fuel consumption over the full distance.
What happened in the 1976 Dutch Grand Prix?
Peterson led away, but Watson and Hunt were soon attacking. Watson’s attempt around the outside at Tarzan briefly put him ahead before he ran wide, allowing Hunt through. Hunt subsequently passed Peterson for the lead, with Watson following and launching a series of determined challenges on the McLaren.
Hunt repeatedly held the inside line at Tarzan as Watson drew alongside. Their absorbing duel ended when the Penske’s gearbox failed. Peterson and Pace later retired with engine-related trouble, while Ickx lost a strong points opportunity to an electrical failure after an excellent climb through the field.
Regazzoni closed rapidly in the final laps, but Hunt reached the flag just three tenths clear. Andretti finished third, followed by Pryce, Scheckter and Depailler. The weekend also brought tragedy in a support race, in which marshal Ron Lenderink was killed.
With subsequent result rulings applied, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 61 points, followed by James Hunt on 47. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 70, with McLaren – Ford on 52.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 7 from rounds 9–16. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables use the final adjudicated Spanish and British results; contemporary standings before the appeals were resolved differed.
