Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 3 leading the 1976 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Patrick Depailler on 6. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 18 points.

Race entries

The new street race gave the United States a second championship event alongside Watkins Glen. Merzario joined the March runners, Hoffmann returned in a new Fittipaldi chassis and Brabham brought a lighter version of its Alfa-powered car. Only 20 drivers would be allowed to start, making qualifying a demanding contest for the larger entry.

Friday morning timed practice

Lauda set the early benchmark as the drivers learned the bumps and concrete-lined streets. Ickx completed little running before a gearbox oil leak forced a change, while Evans suffered an engine failure in his Lotus. The new circuit placed a premium on confidence and mechanical strength, and lost track time was particularly costly without previous Formula One experience here.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Nilsson damaged the second Lotus as drivers pushed harder around the unfamiliar course. Ickx remained sidelined while his gearbox was replaced, losing another opportunity to learn the circuit. Lauda also suffered an engine failure in Ferrari’s spare car. The developing pace was accompanied by mounting repair work, exactly the challenge the bumpy layout had threatened to create.

Saturday untimed practice

Ickx’s difficulties continued when a driveshaft failed, leaving him only the final timed session to recover his lost running. Lotus worked with revised front suspension and outboard brakes on Evans’s car, hoping to improve its handling. With the grid restricted to 20, reliability in these preparatory sessions could determine whether a driver raced at all.

Saturday final qualifying

Regazzoni claimed pole, while Depailler overcame ignition trouble to secure the other front-row position late in the session. Hunt qualified third and Lauda fourth after a broken driveshaft interrupted his final effort. Peterson was the quickest March driver.

Nilsson and Jones secured the final row. Leclère narrowly missed the cut, and Ickx’s troubled weekend left both Wolf-Williams cars out. Evans, Hoffmann, Ertl, Merzario and Lunger also failed to qualify. Ferrari had the strongest overall position, but Depailler had demonstrated that Regazzoni would have company at the start.

What happened in the 1976 United States West Grand Prix?

Regazzoni led away and immediately began building a gap. Brambilla and Reutemann collided at the first corner, while Nilsson’s Lotus suffered a rear-suspension failure and crashed heavily; he escaped serious injury. Hunt’s attempt to pass Depailler ended against the barrier, allowing Lauda to move into second.

Depailler spun but recovered through the field. Pryce and Scheckter both retired with mechanical failures, promoting the Tyrrell back to third. Laffite also recovered impressively after early contact with Watson, passing Mass and Jarier to move into fourth. The tight circuit had tested both the cars and their drivers throughout.

Regazzoni won by more than 40 seconds, completing a grand slam of pole, victory, fastest lap and every lap led. Lauda nursed gearbox trouble to finish second, with Depailler third and Laffite fourth. Mass took fifth, while Fittipaldi passed the struggling Jarier late on to score the Brazilian team’s first championship point. Andretti’s retirement marked Parnelli’s final Formula One appearance.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 24 points, followed by Patrick Depailler on 10. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 27, with Tyrrell – Ford on 13.
