Ian Hugh Gordon Ashley (born 26 October 1947) is a British-German racing driver who competed in Formula One for Token, Williams, BRM and Hesketh. Blessed with obvious speed but prone to dramatic accidents, he acquired the inevitable nickname “Crashley.”

Driving career
Ashley’s motorsport education began in 1966 with a course at the Jim Russell Racing School. His pace was immediately apparent, although consistency proved more elusive.
He reached Formula 5000 in 1972 and established himself as a front-runner the following season. Formula One followed in 1974, with Ashley making his World Championship debut for Token before briefly joining Frank Williams’s team in 1975. His Grand Prix career also included appearances with BRM and Hesketh.
Two enormous practice accidents came to define his time in Formula One, both at circuits that disappeared from the championship soon afterwards.
The first occurred at the Nürburgring during the 1975 German Grand Prix meeting. Ashley crashed heavily at the daunting Pflanzgarten section and broke both ankles.
He returned to Formula One, only to suffer an even more spectacular accident in practice for the 1977 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park. After striking a bump, his Hesketh flipped, cleared the barrier and hit a television tower. Ashley survived, but never raced in Formula One again.
American open-wheel racing
Eight years later, Ashley resurfaced in the CART Championship Car series. He made his debut at the 1985 Miami Grand Prix.
An entry was submitted for the 1986 Indianapolis 500, although the car never appeared on the circuit. Ashley did make three CART starts that season, finishing ninth at Mid-Ohio—a result good enough to place him 28th in the championship. He retired from his other two races.
He also made one Indy Lights appearance at Pocono Raceway and finished sixth.
Ashley returned to CART for a final race in Miami in 1987, but drivetrain failure ended his afternoon.
Later career
Away from motorsport, Ashley established a second career in the United States as an executive-jet pilot—an occupation that maintained the appetite for speed while generally providing more altitude.
He returned to competition in 1993, driving a Vauxhall in the British Touring Car Championship. His restless enthusiasm then led him into the very different discipline of motorcycle sidecar racing, followed by a spell in the one-make TVR Tuscan Challenge.
In November 2009, Ashley completed another unlikely comeback. More than 40 years after his previous Formula Ford experience, he drove an Elden Mk8 in the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone.
It was a fitting continuation of a career repeatedly interrupted by accidents, aviation and long absences—but never quite surrendered.
