Clay Regazzoni delivered a dominant victory in the 1974 German Grand Prix, taking Ferrari back to the top of the drivers’ standings. Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann completed the podium at the Nürburgring, but serious accidents overshadowed the meeting.

Championship background
Regazzoni, Lauda, Scheckter and Fittipaldi remained closely matched in the title contest. Ferrari’s appeal over Lauda’s blocked pit exit at Brands Hatch had not yet produced the later reinstatement shown in the final championship tables.
Race entries
Laffite joined Williams, Ashley drove the Token and Amon returned with his extensively modified car. Illness then led Amon to hand over to Perkins during practice. Ganley brought the Maki, Regazzoni had a new Ferrari chassis and Watson received a new Brabham. The intended grid limit was 25, although first reserve Ashley ultimately started as well.
Friday first timed practice
The opening period began in dry, overcast conditions. Ganley suffered a serious suspension-related accident in the Maki shortly after setting out on a full lap, injuring his ankles and ending his Formula One career. Stuck encountered engine trouble, while Amon’s revised car overheated almost immediately and needed further work on its cooling installation.
Friday second timed practice
Hailwood crashed after a suspension failure near the pits and changed to his other McLaren. Peterson then suffered a wheel failure that badly damaged his Lotus 72. Ferrari escaped the disruption at the front: Lauda recorded 7:00.8, narrowly ahead of Regazzoni, with Scheckter closest to the pair. Nobody reached the much-discussed seven-minute barrier.
Saturday first timed practice
Lotus’s overnight rebuild gave Peterson a hybrid combining a 76 monocoque with 72 rear suspension. Perkins tried the Amon while its owner was unwell, and Fittipaldi improved to challenge behind the Ferraris. Regazzoni’s fuel-metering unit jammed open, leaving him to switch off and be towed back before the break.
Saturday final qualifying
Heavy rain ended any realistic chance of improving the grid. Several drivers tested wet tyres on the short loop around the pits rather than tackling the full Nordschleife. Watson tried his new Brabham, while Ferrari and Tyrrell brought out their spares. Lauda retained pole alongside Regazzoni, followed by Fittipaldi and Scheckter.
Qualifying Classification
The period’s change-of-car rules allowed several drivers to race a different chassis from the one in which they had qualified. Ashley was listed as first reserve but was subsequently allowed to take the start. The pre-race lap around the full circuit was preparation for the start, rather than a separately reported Sunday practice session.
What happened in the 1974 German Grand Prix?
Regazzoni led Scheckter away. Lauda tried to reclaim second at the North Curve, touched the Tyrrell and crashed out. Fittipaldi’s slow getaway caused a collision with Hulme, damaging both McLarens. Hulme attempted to continue in the spare and was disqualified for changing cars after the start.
Regazzoni controlled the race while Scheckter resisted Reutemann. Occasional rain made parts of the circuit slippery without forcing a stoppage. Mass ran strongly before his engine failed, and the Lotus pair fought for fourth. Hailwood suffered a major accident at Pflanzgarten late in the race, sustaining leg injuries that ended his Formula One career.
Regazzoni won by more than 50 seconds, with Scheckter second and Reutemann third despite a deteriorating rear wing. Peterson beat Ickx to fourth on the final straight, and Pryce earned his first championship point in sixth. The victory was Regazzoni’s first since Monza in 1970 and put him firmly at the centre of the title contest.
With subsequent result rulings applied, Clay Regazzoni headed the drivers’ standings with 44 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 41. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 57, with McLaren – Ford on 49.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 6 from rounds 9–15. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables include Lauda’s British Grand Prix fifth place, restored on appeal before the Canadian round; contemporary standings before the ruling differed.
