Championship background

Regazzoni arrived after his dominant Nürburgring victory, with Scheckter, Lauda and Fittipaldi still in contention. Ferrari’s appeal over the British result remained unresolved at this stage.

Race entries

Hobbs replaced the injured Hailwood at McLaren, Stommelen joined Hill’s Lola team and Ian Scheckter appeared in a second Hesketh. Quester drove a Surtees, Koinigg entered a private Brabham and Wilds took over at Ensign. Mass had left Surtees, with Jabouille joining Bell in the works line-up. BRM reduced its effort to Beltoise alone. Thirty-one drivers sought 25 grid places.

Friday first timed practice

Reutemann established the pace in intense heat. Ian Scheckter’s Hesketh engine failed early, and Lauda also suffered a major engine failure, leaving Ferrari to prepare the spare. Fuel vaporisation and persistent understeer frustrated several teams as they tried to balance their cars through the fast downhill corners.

Friday second timed practice

Reutemann remained fastest after the recovery break, with Jody Scheckter, Hunt and Fittipaldi leading the pursuit. Lauda continued in the spare Ferrari. Lotus compared its 72 and revised 76 without finding a consistently convincing solution, and the front-running order suggested Brabham was better suited to the circuit than it had been at several recent rounds.

Saturday first timed practice

Pace headed the opening part of Saturday’s running, reinforcing Brabham’s challenge. Lauda returned to his usual Ferrari with a replacement engine, while Pryce used the spare Shadow. The heat worsened, and Laffite lost time to a driveshaft change. Drivers also had to cope with a deteriorating braking surface approaching the final corner.

Saturday final qualifying

Lauda snatched pole late in the session, narrowly denying Reutemann. Fittipaldi separated the Brabhams on the grid, but McLaren endured repeated engine failures across its cars. Regazzoni and Wilds damaged their machines after leaving the road, Hunt suffered gearbox trouble, and Pryce crashed the spare Shadow. Ickx opted to race the Lotus 76 despite qualifying well down the order.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1974 Austrian Grand Prix?

Reutemann beat Lauda away and led throughout. Regazzoni moved past Pace to follow his Ferrari team-mate, but Lauda developed engine trouble and retired. Scheckter’s Tyrrell also failed, while Hunt and Watson lost time to tyre stops. Laffite joined very late after a jammed wheel nut delayed him before the start.

Regazzoni then slowed with a deflating tyre, allowing Pace and Peterson through. Brabham briefly held first and second before Pace stopped with a fuel leak. Fittipaldi’s engine failed, Depailler and Ickx collided, and Peterson retired with a driveshaft failure while running second.

Reutemann brought the Brabham safely home, with Hulme taking what proved to be his final Formula One podium in second. Hunt recovered to third and Watson finished fourth. Regazzoni salvaged fifth after a slow tyre stop, passing Brambilla near the finish. The championship contenders had endured a costly afternoon, while Reutemann converted his pace into an emphatic victory.

With subsequent result rulings applied, Clay Regazzoni headed the drivers’ standings with 46 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 41. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 59, with McLaren – Ford on 55.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 6 from rounds 9–15. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables include Lauda’s British Grand Prix fifth place, restored on appeal before the Canadian round; contemporary standings before the ruling differed.
