Jody Scheckter won the 1974 British Grand Prix after a late puncture denied Niki Lauda at Brands Hatch. Emerson Fittipaldi finished second and Jacky Ickx third, while Ferrari’s subsequent appeal restored Lauda to fifth after his exit from the pits had been blocked.

Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 10 leading the 1974 F1 World Championship on 36 points, with Clay Regazzoni on 32. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 45 points.
Race entries
Pace joined the works Brabham team, replacing von Opel. Bell appeared for Surtees, while Gethin took over Edwards’ Lola after the injured driver found he could not manage the car. Lombardi, Wilds and Nicholson attempted their first championship entries, and Ganley brought the Japanese Maki. Tyrrell had a new spare 007 and Fittipaldi a revised McLaren M23.
Thursday morning timed practice
Pryce surprised the established leaders by setting the fastest time and winning the session’s champagne prize. Scheckter suffered a rear-suspension link failure, interrupting an otherwise promising Tyrrell weekend. The crowded field had all been allowed an opportunity to qualify, with temporary pit facilities accommodating some of the smaller entrants.
Thursday afternoon timed practice
Lauda began to assert Ferrari’s pace as the leading drivers worked below the circuit’s previous benchmarks. Hunt’s new Hesketh suffered a transmission failure on the opening day, obliging the team to repair it while keeping the older car available. Hailwood also showed strongly during Thursday’s running, although he would slip down the order as others improved.
Friday first timed practice
Lauda continued to provide the target. Scheckter briefly tried Tyrrell’s new spare, while Fittipaldi compared his revised McLaren with the familiar car. Ganley’s Maki finally joined the meeting, but the newcomers faced a demanding task simply to make the grid. Pace’s troublesome Brabham handling persisted, eventually traced to a loose front-suspension circlip.
Friday final qualifying
Peterson matched Lauda’s 1:19.7 after a determined final-session effort, but the Ferrari retained pole because its time came first. Scheckter and Reutemann formed the second row, followed by Pryce and Hunt. Schenken took the last starting place. Bell, Lombardi, Nicholson, Ganley and Wilds were among those who failed to qualify.
Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.
Saturday warm-up
A half-hour session preceded the Saturday race, with Mass and Reutemann absent from the running. A leaking fuel bag subsequently forced Hunt into the older Hesketh. Gethin suffered an engine failure on the formation lap and switched to Hill’s spare, whose cockpit did not fit him comfortably.
What happened in the 1974 British Grand Prix?
Lauda led Scheckter and Regazzoni away, with Peterson trapped behind the second Ferrari. Hunt retired after a suspension bolt broke, and Gethin stopped after one lap in the ill-fitting spare. Lauda steadily built a lead while Scheckter kept him in sight.
Stuck’s accident scattered debris, and punctures disrupted several leading cars. Regazzoni and Peterson needed stops; Lauda then developed a slowly deflating rear tyre. He stayed out as Scheckter and Fittipaldi passed, finally stopping when the tyre began to break up. After the wheel change, people and a course car obstructed the pit exit, preventing him from rejoining.
Scheckter won ahead of Fittipaldi, Ickx and Regazzoni. Lauda was initially placed ninth, but Ferrari’s appeal secured credit for an additional lap and fifth in the final result. Reutemann took the last point. Pryce’s determined run ended just outside the points despite serious chassis and gear-selection trouble.
With subsequent result rulings applied, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 38 points, followed by Emerson Fittipaldi on 37. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 49, with Ferrari on 48.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 6 from rounds 9–15. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables include Lauda’s British Grand Prix fifth place, restored on appeal before the Canadian round; contemporary standings before the ruling differed.
