Jackie Stewart returned from illness with victory at Charade, but Chris Amon’s extraordinary drive was the French Grand Prix’s sporting centrepiece. A puncture denied the Matra driver a likely win before he charged back to third behind Emerson Fittipaldi. The race was overshadowed by the eye injury that ended Helmut Marko’s Formula One career.

Championship background
Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 6 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 28 points, with Denny Hulme on 19. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 28 points.
Race entries
Stewart rejoined Tyrrell, which also entered local driver Patrick Depailler for his championship debut. Nanni Galli replaced the injured Regazzoni at Ferrari, and Brian Redman again deputised for Revson at McLaren. March abandoned its troublesome 721X cars for the 721G, while Amon received the new Matra MS120D.
Friday timed practice
Cevert showed immediate speed in the new Tyrrell 005 before crashing and damaging its monocoque. He switched to his older car, while Stewart quickly recovered his rhythm and Amon took confidently to the new Matra. Redman also crashed, taking over Hulme’s spare McLaren, and Walker returned with a damaged wheel and oil cooler after hitting the barriers.
Saturday first timed practice
Threatening weather prompted hurried tyre changes before the delayed session began. Amon set the pace, while Cevert’s injured hand added to his difficulties in the older Tyrrell. Walker and Reutemann suffered engine failures, and Hulme worked to improve the newer McLaren after his preferred older car had been handed to Redman.
Saturday final qualifying
Amon pushed the benchmark down to 2:53.4, with Hulme responding strongly to take second. Fittipaldi lost oil pressure and moved into the spare Lotus. Stones dragged onto the track contributed to Gethin’s accident, while Pescarolo also crashed heavily enough to miss the race. Cracks in the Tecno chassis prevented Bell from starting; Cevert’s faster Friday lap in the damaged new Tyrrell did not determine his grid position in the replacement car.
Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday untimed practice
Fittipaldi was much happier with his Lotus during the extra Sunday running. Beltoise suffered a driveshaft failure that damaged his BRM beyond immediate repair, so the team gave him Ganley’s car. That left Ganley without a start and put Beltoise at the back because he had not qualified in that chassis.
What happened in the 1972 French Grand Prix?
Amon led from the start and established a strong position as Stewart moved into second. Loose stones caused repeated punctures and a far more serious incident when one struck Marko’s visor, leaving him blind in one eye and ending his racing career. The danger became the lasting concern of Charade’s final championship Grand Prix.
A puncture forced Amon into the pits and handed Stewart the lead. Fittipaldi advanced into second, but Amon returned to the race at exceptional speed, setting fastest lap as he recovered position after position. His charge brought him back into the podium places.
Stewart took the victory, with Fittipaldi narrowly holding second ahead of Amon. Cevert finished fourth despite his painful hand, followed by Peterson and Hailwood. Amon’s performance demonstrated the new Matra’s potential, but another chance of a championship victory had slipped away.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 34 points, followed by Jackie Stewart on 21. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 34, with Tyrrell – Ford on 27.
