Championship background
Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 7 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 34 points, with Jackie Stewart on 21. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 34 points.
Race entries
Arturo Merzario made his championship debut for Ferrari, replacing Galli, who returned to Tecno. Williams introduced its Politoys car for Pescarolo. The Connew appeared with François Migault but withdrew after practice damage, while BRM fielded Beltoise, Gethin and Oliver. Hulme arrived sore from a recent Can-Am accident.
Thursday first timed practice
Fittipaldi led the opening session in the spare Lotus while his regular car required oil-system attention. Lotus also discovered cracks in suspension-support structures that needed repair. Lauda waited for his new March to be completed, and the Connew damaged its underside over Brands Hatch’s dips, ending its weekend early.
Thursday second timed practice
Stewart improved strongly in the new Tyrrell 005 before a failure sent him into the barriers and interrupted running. He switched back to his older car. Revson showed excellent pace, while Hulme cautiously assessed his fitness and Lauda borrowed Beuttler’s March for a few laps.
Friday first timed practice
Lauda’s own car was finally ready, and Hulme felt stronger as the McLarens circulated together. Galli pushed the Tecno hard before its engine failed, requiring replacement. Ickx’s 1:22.2 proved the weekend’s fastest lap, while increasing heat and dust made further improvements more difficult.
Friday final qualifying
Amon crashed the new Matra at Druids, stopping practice while it was recovered and forcing him into the older spare. Fittipaldi tried a lighter fuel load and different tyres, but the official timing left him second to Ickx. Stewart and Revson remained competitive despite both using older machinery than originally intended.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Saturday untimed practice
A short morning session allowed final checks before the 14:30 race. Stewart and Amon prepared to race their spare cars, while Hulme’s fitness had improved. Later, on the grid, Surtees mechanics worked urgently on a radiator leak in Hailwood’s car.
What happened in the 1972 British Grand Prix?
Ickx led Fittipaldi away, with Beltoise initially holding up the pursuing group. Stewart worked through and eventually joined the leaders, briefly taking second before Fittipaldi repassed him. Pescarolo escaped injury when the new Politoys crashed after a failure.
An oil leak steadily weakened Ickx’s Ferrari until he had to retire. Fittipaldi inherited the lead and held Stewart at bay, with Revson secure in third. Further back, punctures, accidents and mechanical problems repeatedly changed the points positions, while Merzario recovered determinedly from a tyre stop.
Fittipaldi won ahead of Stewart and Revson. Peterson’s engine stopped near the finish and his March crashed into the parked cars of Cevert and Hill, promoting Amon, Hulme and debutant Merzario into the remaining points. Lotus left Brands Hatch with another important championship victory.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 43 points, followed by Jackie Stewart on 27. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 43, with Tyrrell – Ford on 33.
