Championship background
Denny Hulme arrived at round 3 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 15 points, with Jackie Stewart on 9. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 15 points.
Race entries
Wilson Fittipaldi replaced the injured Carlos Reutemann at Brabham, joining his younger brother Emerson on a championship grid for the first time. Hill tried the new BT37, while March’s difficult 721X programme continued. Mike Beuttler brought a 721G, but fuel-system problems left it insufficiently prepared and he failed to qualify.
Saturday timed practice
Fittipaldi was the only driver below 1:20 during a busy two-hour session. Stewart used both Tyrrells, while Andretti managed just five laps before his Ferrari engine failed. Brabham enjoyed extensive, largely reliable running, in sharp contrast to March: Lauda’s gear-change caused trouble and Beuttler’s new car still needed considerable work.
Sunday final qualifying
Ickx produced a decisive 1:18.43 for pole as Ferrari experimented with narrower nose bodywork. Fittipaldi remained quick until an engine failure forced him into Walker’s Lotus. Hulme tried both McLarens and chose the older car for the race, while Surtees struggled for traction out of Jarama’s slow corners. The new BRM P180 also looked unsettled under braking.
Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Monday pre-race warm-up laps
Rain left Jarama cold and damp on Monday morning, but strong winds helped dry the circuit before the noon start. Drivers were allowed reconnaissance and warm-up laps to assess the surface. Fittipaldi’s auxiliary fuel tank developed a leak and had to be isolated, leaving fuel consumption a concern for the race.
What happened in the 1972 Spanish Grand Prix?
Hulme sprang away at the start, but Stewart soon took over. Fittipaldi then found his way past Hulme and Ickx together before catching and passing Stewart under braking. Behind them, Peterson’s opening-lap incident disrupted several rivals, and his damaged March eventually retired.
A light shower briefly helped Ickx close on the leading Lotus, but Fittipaldi rebuilt his advantage as the track dried. Hulme retired with gearbox trouble and Stewart spun off, handing third to Regazzoni. De Adamich held off a lively group battling for the remaining points.
Fittipaldi managed his fuel carefully without surrendering control, winning by nearly 20 seconds. Ickx and Regazzoni completed the podium, followed by de Adamich, Revson and Pace. Walker ran out of fuel near the finish, underlining how important Fittipaldi’s measured approach had been.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Denny Hulme on 15. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 17, with Lotus – Ford on 15.
