Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 16 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 72 points, with Mario Andretti on 47. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 89 points.
Race entries
Newly crowned champion Niki Lauda left Ferrari before the final two races, leaving Reutemann and Canadian newcomer Gilles Villeneuve to represent the team. Patrese returned to Shadow after missing Watkins Glen. Several teams also arrived with rebuilt cars after the previous weekend, including March, Brabham and Shadow.
Friday morning timed practice
Andretti set a commanding early pace, while Hunt lost running to a broken exhaust. The session was overshadowed by Ian Ashley’s serious Hesketh accident. His rescue and transfer to hospital raised further concerns about Mosport’s safety arrangements, and the organisers agreed to provide a helicopter for the remainder of the weekend. Ashley’s injuries ended his Formula One career.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Andretti improved again, with Hunt the only driver close to the Lotus’s pace. Mass crashed at the first corner, where the barrier’s response intensified the safety debate. Villeneuve struggled to find confidence in the Ferrari and damaged it in a spin at the hairpin. The mechanics repaired it overnight, but his first Ferrari weekend was proving far harder than his McLaren debut.
Saturday untimed practice
Heavy rain left little useful running on the saturated circuit. With repairs completed after Friday’s incidents, the teams had limited opportunity to confirm their work in representative conditions. Villeneuve’s rebuilt Ferrari was available again, but the weather prevented a meaningful continuation of his dry-weather preparations.
Saturday final qualifying
The wet circuit made Friday’s times decisive. Jabouille was quickest among the few drivers who ran, but Renault’s earlier engine problems had left him too far down the combined order to qualify. Andretti retained pole ahead of Hunt, with Peterson and Nilsson on the second row.
Scheckter qualified ninth for Wolf’s home race, while Villeneuve started 17th. Ashley’s injury reduced the eventual field, and the weekend’s safety concerns remained prominent despite the completion of qualifying.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday warm-up
The final warm-up took place on a soaked circuit without major incident. Rain then eased and the track dried substantially before the start, leaving the teams to prepare for a race in conditions very different from Saturday’s limited running.
What happened in the 1977 Canadian Grand Prix?
Andretti led Hunt away, and the two pulled far clear of the field. Mass ran third, but the leaders eventually caught him to lap him. Hunt passed Andretti in the traffic, then collided with his own teammate when they misunderstood each other’s intentions. Hunt retired, while Mass continued after losing places.
Andretti appeared secure until his engine failed with only a few laps remaining. Oil from the stricken Lotus caused several further incidents: Patrese and Brambilla crashed, while Villeneuve spun and broke a driveshaft trying to rejoin. The sequence transformed both the lead and the lower points positions.
Scheckter inherited victory ahead of Depailler and Mass, giving Walter Wolf’s Canadian team its third win of the season. Jones and Tambay finished fourth and fifth, while Brambilla was classified sixth despite his late accident. Ongais narrowly missed a point in seventh. A dramatic sporting finish could not erase the safety concerns that had dominated Mosport’s final Grand Prix weekend.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 72 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 55. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 89, with Lotus – Ford on 62.
