James Hunt delighted Silverstone with victory in the 1977 British Grand Prix, giving McLaren’s M26 its first championship win. He recovered from a hesitant start to pressure John Watson before the Brabham’s fuel system failed. Niki Lauda finished second, while Gilles Villeneuve’s debut and Renault’s turbocharged arrival added lasting significance to the weekend.

Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 10 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 33 points, with Mario Andretti on 32. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 50 points.
Race entries
Villeneuve joined Hunt and Jochen Mass in a third works McLaren. Renault entered Jean-Pierre Jabouille in the RS01, bringing a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and Michelin radial tyres into Formula One. Patrick Tambay moved to a Theodore-backed Ensign, while Vern Schuppan took the second Surtees. The large entry required Wednesday pre-qualifying before the main Thursday and Friday sessions.
Wednesday first pre-qualifying session
Fourteen drivers began the preliminary contest for admission to official practice. The group included Villeneuve and Tambay alongside private entrants and several championship newcomers. Mikko Kozarowitzky crashed his RAM-run March in the first session, ending his prospects early. Times from this preliminary day would not carry over to the Grand Prix grid.
Wednesday second pre-qualifying session
David Purley suffered a serious accident when his LEC’s throttle stuck open. He survived with multiple injuries, but his World Championship career was over. Villeneuve headed the combined times ahead of Tambay, Jarier, Lunger and Henton. Merzario and Nève were subsequently admitted as well, and de Villota gained a place when Ertl withdrew, expanding the original allocation of five qualifiers.

Thursday morning timed practice
Hunt set the pace as McLaren’s steady work on the M26 began to pay off. The preliminary qualifiers had to adjust to the tyre allocation for official practice, making their Wednesday times a poor direct comparison. Renault’s debut was immediately difficult: turbocharger and fuel-injection trouble interrupted Jabouille’s running and left the new car outside the qualifying places at the end of the day.
Thursday afternoon timed practice
Hunt improved to 1min 18.49sec, with Lauda his closest challenger. Andretti’s afternoon was repeatedly disrupted: avoiding a wayward Surtees sent him off the circuit, and the spare Lotus then suffered transmission trouble. He returned to his original car after it was retrieved, but lost the uninterrupted running needed to refine its handling.
Friday untimed practice
Dry conditions gave the teams another opportunity to prepare before the final qualifying hour. Renault still needed to establish a place in the race after its Thursday troubles, while Schuppan continued learning the Surtees. Andretti remained dissatisfied with the Lotus’s balance, in contrast to Nilsson, who was increasingly confident in the other car.
Friday final qualifying
Watson was fastest in the final session but could not beat Hunt’s Thursday lap, leaving the McLaren on pole. Lauda and Jody Scheckter formed the second row, with Nilsson ahead of Andretti on row three. Villeneuve qualified ninth in an impressive first Formula One appearance.
Jabouille secured Renault’s first start, but Regazzoni unexpectedly failed to qualify the works Ensign. Ribeiro, Henton and de Villota also missed the 26-car grid. Tambay qualified comfortably in his new Ensign and would finally make his race debut after missing out in France.

Saturday warm-up
Watson settled on Brabham’s older spare car because he preferred its handling, while Laffite also selected the earlier Ligier. Depailler briefly tried Tyrrell’s spare before returning to his regular six-wheeler. Lotus fitted a Nicholson-prepared engine for Andretti, and the teams rehearsed wheel changes as threatening clouds gathered.
What happened in the 1977 British Grand Prix?
Watson led away as Hunt’s clutch trouble dropped him to fourth behind Lauda and Scheckter. Hunt passed the Wolf, then worked his way past Lauda and closed on the leading Brabham. Villeneuve ran with the leading group until a faulty temperature gauge prompted an unnecessary pit stop that cost him two laps.
Hunt repeatedly challenged Watson, who defended strongly until a loss of fuel pressure allowed the McLaren into the lead. A stop failed to cure the Brabham’s problem and Watson eventually retired. Renault’s first race also ended early with turbocharger trouble, though its brief appearance marked the beginning of a major technical shift.
Hunt controlled the closing stages to take his first victory of the season. Scheckter and Andretti both lost possible points to late engine failures, while Nilsson closed rapidly on Lauda but finished third. Mass, Stuck and Laffite completed the points. Villeneuve’s 11th place concealed a strikingly assured debut that had attracted attention far beyond his final result.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 39 points, followed by Mario Andretti on 32. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 56, with Lotus – Ford on 47.
