Rupert Keegan (26 February 1955 – 23 September 2024) was an English racing driver who entered 37 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, making his debut on 8 May 1977. Although a championship point ultimately eluded him, Keegan enjoyed success elsewhere in single-seater racing and built a career that also took him into American and endurance competition.

His route to Formula One accelerated dramatically in 1976 when he won the British Formula 3 Championship. That title put Keegan firmly on the F1 paddock’s radar, and the following season he stepped into Formula One with Hesketh. The car was hardly among the class of the field, but Keegan produced his best World Championship result at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix, bringing the Hesketh 308E/1 home in seventh place — agonisingly close to the points under the scoring system of the day.
A move to Surtees followed, although once again Keegan found himself trying to make an impression with a team struggling for competitiveness. Away from the World Championship, however, he demonstrated what he could do in winning machinery by capturing the 1979 Aurora Formula One Championship.
Keegan subsequently returned to the Formula One World Championship with RAM, racing a Williams FW07B, but strong results proved difficult to come by. A handful of appearances with March brought little improvement, and his Grand Prix career eventually closed with 25 race starts and no World Championship points.
There was plenty of racing life beyond Formula One. Keegan headed across the Atlantic to compete in the American CART series and also turned his hand to endurance racing, extending a career that had already taken him from British Formula 3 champion to the highest level of international single-seater competition.
After hanging up his helmet, Keegan pursued a number of business interests while remaining connected to the sport as a racing instructor, passing his experience on to other drivers.
Keegan died in Portoferraio, Italy, on 23 September 2024 following a long battle with cancer. He was 69.
