McGuire was a British-based Formula One constructor founded by Australian racing driver Brian McGuire. The team made a single attempt to qualify for a Formula One World Championship event, entering the 1977 British Grand Prix with the McGuire BM1. Although it failed to reach the starting grid, the constructor became part of Formula One history through its ambitious privateer effort.

Origins
Brian McGuire launched his Formula One project after competing in the British-based Shellsport G8 International Series during 1976. Racing as a private entrant, he used a Williams FW04 built to Formula One specification, gaining experience against many current and former Grand Prix cars outside the World Championship.
That same year, McGuire entered the Williams for the 1976 British Grand Prix. However, he was listed only as a reserve driver and did not take part in the event.
Formula One
For the 1977 season, McGuire extensively reworked the Williams chassis to create his own Formula One car, which became known as the McGuire BM1. Although based on the earlier FW04, the modified machine was entered under McGuire’s own name, making the Australian driver the founder of his own Formula One constructor.
The BM1 was entered for the 1977 British Grand Prix, where it faced the increasingly competitive pre-qualifying sessions reserved for privateers and smaller teams. The car struggled for pace, with McGuire recording the slowest time of all the drivers who completed representative laps. Only Mikko Kozarowitzky, whose session ended in an accident, failed to post a quicker time.
As a result, McGuire did not progress to the main qualifying session and the team’s only attempt to reach a Formula One World Championship race ended without a grid position.
Legacy
Later in 1977, Brian McGuire was killed while driving the McGuire BM1 during a race at Brands Hatch, bringing an abrupt end to both his career and the constructor that bore his name.
Although McGuire’s Formula One story lasted only a single World Championship entry, the team remains one of the many independent privateer constructors that embodied Formula One’s open and entrepreneurial spirit during the 1970s.
