Brian Anthony Joseph McGuire (13 December 1945 – 29 August 1977) was an Australian racing driver and constructor who competed in Formula One during the mid-1970s. Although he never started a World Championship Grand Prix, McGuire became one of the few drivers to design and race a car under his own name.

Early Career
Born in Australia on 13 December 1945, McGuire developed his racing career before relocating to the United Kingdom in pursuit of greater opportunities in European motorsport.
Among those making the journey with him was fellow Australian Alan Jones, who would later become Formula One World Champion. While Jones went on to achieve considerable success at the highest level, McGuire’s career proved far more challenging as he fought to establish himself among increasingly competitive Formula One grids.
Formula One Career
McGuire entered the Formula One World Championship on two occasions, both at the British Grand Prix.
His first attempt came in 1976, when he entered a privately run Williams FW04. Listed only as a reserve entry, he was ultimately denied the opportunity to compete after failing to secure a place on the starting grid.
Determined to improve his chances, McGuire extensively modified the Williams chassis for the 1977 season. The revised car was renamed the McGuire BM1, making him one of the few Formula One competitors to race machinery bearing his own name.
Despite the effort invested in the project, McGuire was unable to pre-qualify for the 1977 British Grand Prix, bringing his Formula One ambitions to an end without a World Championship race start.
Constructor
As the creator of the McGuire BM1, Brian McGuire also earned recognition as a Formula One constructor. Based on the Williams FW04 but extensively reworked, the BM1 reflected the ingenuity and determination of independent entrants who continued to challenge established manufacturers during the 1970s.
Although the project never reached a Formula One race, it remains part of the championship’s constructor history and serves as an example of the era’s enterprising privateer spirit.
Death and Legacy
Later in 1977, McGuire entered the McGuire BM1 in the Shellsport G8 Championship, a series that featured former Formula One machinery.
During practice at Brands Hatch on 29 August 1977, he suffered a fatal accident while driving the car. He died at the age of 31.
