Niki Lauda won the 1977 South African Grand Prix, his first victory since his Nürburgring accident the previous year. The sporting result was overshadowed by the collision that killed Tom Pryce and marshal Frederik Jansen van Vuuren during the race.

Championship background
Carlos Reutemann arrived at round 3 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 13 points, with Jody Scheckter on 9. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 13 points.
Race entries
Kyalami again used Wednesday and Thursday practice before a Saturday race, leaving Friday for preparation. Hans-Joachim Stuck joined the March runners, with Boy Hayje and Brett Lunger also entered in March machinery. Brabham brought its revised BT45B, while BRM reverted to its older car after the new model’s difficult Brazilian appearance.
Wednesday morning timed practice
Drizzle greeted teams accustomed to dry testing at Kyalami. Only a limited number of drivers ventured out, and Stuck was fastest despite an oil-pressure problem that curtailed his running. The wet conditions made the earlier dry preparations of little immediate use, and times were far slower than the circuit’s usual pace.
Wednesday afternoon timed practice
More drivers ran as forecasts suggested the rain might persist. Pryce was impressively quick in the new Shadow despite brake trouble, establishing the wet-weather benchmark. Some leading teams remained cautious, and Lauda and Fittipaldi used their spare cars. The possibility of a wet grid-setting weekend made even these slow laps potentially important.
Thursday untimed practice
A dry track transformed the morning, but its times did not count towards the grid. Hunt set the pace as teams adjusted aerodynamic balance and rear roll bars for Kyalami’s fast changes of direction. Pace tried the revised Brabham and preferred its handling. Spinning or mechanically troubled cars repeatedly interrupted others’ attempts to find clear laps.
Thursday final qualifying
The dry final hour settled the entire grid. Hunt secured his third consecutive pole, with Pace alongside after a timing review. Lauda and Depailler formed the second row. Andretti salvaged sixth before his smoking engine finally gave up, while Watson’s engine trouble left him farther back.
Lauda lost time to tyre-pressure difficulties, and Lunger’s engine failed before he could complete a representative programme. The packed circuit made clean laps hard to find. Rain returned as practice ended, but the teams now had Friday available to complete their race preparation.

Saturday warm-up
Saturday began dry but overcast. The early warm-up gave the teams a final opportunity to check their cars after Friday’s preparation day. Pace retained the revised Brabham, while Hunt prepared to defend pole over 78 laps as the threat of further rain receded.
What happened in the 1977 South African Grand Prix?
Hunt led at the start, with Lauda and Scheckter passing the slower-starting Pace. Lauda moved ahead on lap seven and remained in front, while Scheckter later took second from Hunt. Pryce recovered places after a poor getaway, and Peterson retired with fuel-pressure trouble.
Zorzi stopped with his Shadow on fire beside the main straight. As marshals crossed the live track to assist, Pryce’s car struck Frederik Jansen van Vuuren; both men were killed. The uncontrolled Shadow subsequently collided with Laffite’s Ligier. The tragedy cast a shadow over the rest of the event.
Lauda continued to victory despite cooling-system damage caused by debris, with Scheckter second and Depailler taking third from Hunt late in the race. Jochen Mass and Reutemann completed the points places. It was a significant comeback victory for Lauda, but the deaths of Pryce and van Vuuren left no room for celebration.
After the race, Jody Scheckter headed the drivers’ standings with 15 points, followed by Carlos Reutemann on 13. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 22, with Wolf – Ford on 15.
