James Hunt ended the 1977 season with victory at Fuji, the final Grand Prix win of his career. Carlos Reutemann finished second and Patrick Depailler third, but the Japanese Grand Prix was overshadowed by a fatal accident involving Gilles Villeneuve and Ronnie Peterson.

Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 17 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 72 points, with Jody Scheckter on 55. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 89 points.
Race entries
Lauda remained absent after leaving Ferrari, while Fittipaldi, Renault and Hesketh also missed the trip. Kojima entered Noritake Takahara and Kazuyoshi Hoshino, and Kunimitsu Takahashi drove an older Tyrrell. Ligier added a second car for Jarier. Ian Scheckter was unable to enter Japan because of visa difficulties, leaving March with Ribeiro alone.
Friday combined timed practice
The circuit doctor’s late arrival delayed the planned morning session, so the teams agreed to combine Friday’s running into one two-hour period. Andretti set the pace, with Hunt close behind after switching to Mass’s McLaren because he disliked his own car’s understeer. Watson remained competitive despite repeated stops to replenish his Brabham’s water.
Both Ferrari drivers struggled with unstable handling, while Hoshino made a strong impression in the locally built Kojima. Scheckter lost running first to gearbox trouble in one Wolf and then an engine failure in the other. Patrese also had an unexpected excursion when a rear shock-absorber mounting came loose.
Saturday untimed practice
Tyre durability became a central concern on Fuji’s abrasive surface. Andretti tried harder rubber but found that it upset the Lotus’s balance and produced excessive understeer, persuading him to retain the softer compound. Full-fuel running exposed the trade-off between grip and wear that the teams would have to manage during the race.
Saturday final qualifying
Andretti and Hunt’s Friday times remained unbeaten, securing the front row. Watson came close and headed an all-Brabham second row, with Laffite fifth after Ligier’s earlier fuel-mixture difficulties. Scheckter recovered sufficiently from his mechanical problems to qualify sixth.
Reutemann continued working with the Ferrari’s difficult handling and qualified seventh, while Villeneuve remained near the back. Hoshino’s promising Friday lap secured a midfield position, ahead of both Shadows. With the reduced entry, the contest centred on grid position rather than eliminating a large group of non-qualifiers.

What happened in the 1977 Japanese Grand Prix?
Hunt led away as Andretti made a poor start and became involved in a second-lap collision with Binder and Takahara. All three retired. Hunt pulled clear, while Mass moved into second and Watson passed Scheckter to take third.
On lap six, Villeneuve’s Ferrari collided with Peterson’s Tyrrell and left the circuit. A marshal and a photographer were killed. The tragedy overshadowed the race, which continued. Later, mechanical failures eliminated both Mass and Watson, while Laffite passed Reutemann to move into second.
Hunt completed a comfortable victory, but Laffite ran out of fuel on the final lap and lost his podium place. Reutemann finished second and Depailler third, followed by Jones and Tambay, with Laffite classified sixth. The season ended with Lauda already champion and Ferrari holding the constructors’ title; Formula One would not return to Japan until 1987.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 72 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 55. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 95, with Lotus – Ford on 62.
