Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 15 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 69 points, with Jody Scheckter on 42. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 86 points.
Race entries
Danny Ongais made his Grand Prix debut in an Interscope-entered Penske. Jean-Pierre Jarier returned to Shadow in place of Patrese, who had Formula Two commitments, while Hans Binder rejoined Surtees. ATS did not travel to North America. Andretti arrived hoping to add a Watkins Glen victory to his earlier success at Long Beach.
Friday morning timed practice
Hunt immediately set the pace in cool, dry conditions, with Stuck the nearest challenger. Watson struggled with inconsistent handling between left- and right-hand corners, while the Lotus camp faced a less comfortable start than anticipated. The prospect of rain made a strong early lap especially useful, although the decisive times would come later in the day.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Hunt improved to 1min 40.863sec before spinning off after running over a kerb. The McLaren suffered rear-suspension damage but could be repaired. Stuck moved into Brabham’s spare after cracks appeared in his gearbox casing and secured second overall; Watson improved to third. Ongais’s debut preparations were hampered by fuel-system and spark-plug trouble.
Saturday untimed practice
Ian Scheckter crashed his March, leaving the mechanics with substantial repair work before the race. Rain arrived towards the end of the untimed running and changed the outlook for final qualifying. Hunt’s repaired McLaren no longer needed to chase a faster lap if the circuit remained wet.
Saturday final qualifying
Heavy rain left the Friday grid untouched. Alan Jones was quickest in the wet, demonstrating the confidence he had already shown in difficult conditions during the season, but his time could not threaten the dry-session benchmarks.
Hunt therefore retained pole ahead of Stuck, Watson and Andretti. Peterson qualified fifth, with the Ferraris behind him, while Scheckter faced a midfield start in the Wolf. The session’s value lay in wet-weather preparation rather than any realistic chance of improving grid positions.

What happened in the 1977 United States Grand Prix?
Rain intensified before the start, and Watson alone gambled on slick tyres. Stuck surged into the lead ahead of Hunt, while Scheckter quickly worked through the spray. The leading Brabham lost its clutch cable, and the resulting difficulty changing gear eventually sent Stuck off the circuit and out of the race.
Hunt inherited a comfortable lead over Andretti, with Scheckter third and Lauda safely placed fourth. As the rain eased and a drying line developed, preserving the wet-weather tyres became increasingly important. Hunt slowed in response to his pit signals, but Andretti continued closing more quickly than McLaren anticipated.
The Lotus was within striking distance as the final lap began, prompting Hunt to increase his pace and secure victory by just over two seconds. Scheckter completed the podium, while Lauda’s fourth place settled the championship. Reutemann and Laffite took the remaining points. Hunt had won at Watkins Glen for the second year running, but the larger celebration belonged to the newly crowned champion.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 72 points, followed by Mario Andretti on 47. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 89, with Lotus – Ford on 62.
