Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 4 leading the 1971 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Jacky Ickx on 10. Tyrrell – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 24 points.

Race entries

Gijs van Lennep made his championship debut in a Surtees, while Dave Walker brought Lotus’ four-wheel-drive gas-turbine car into World Championship competition. Walker also practised in a Lotus 72, but damage to that car prevented Charlton from taking it over as planned. Ferrari brought its newer 312B2 cars and older spares.

Friday first timed practice

A favourable wind encouraged quick laps, with Regazzoni setting the early pace before his engine failed. Walker crashed the Lotus 72 and damaged its rear end beyond immediate repair. Stewart experimented with Tyrrell’s twin-disc brakes, while several drivers used the dry running urgently with worse weather expected.

Friday second timed practice

Ickx and Rodríguez traded exceptionally quick laps, with Stewart close enough to challenge the twelve-cylinder cars. Ferrari’s afternoon then deteriorated: Regazzoni crashed the spare and Andretti suffered a major accident. Both incidents were traced to tyre behaviour on unusually wide rims, forcing the team to reshuffle its remaining cars.

Saturday first timed practice

Heavy rain kept several drivers in the pits, while Regazzoni and Rodríguez were fastest among those who ran. Lotus completed the turbine car’s preparation and Walker began learning it in the wet. Those who skipped the session lost useful experience for Sunday when the afternoon unexpectedly dried.

Saturday final qualifying

Warm, dry conditions returned, but a changed wind direction made Friday’s best times largely unreachable. Regazzoni and Siffert headed the session, while Peterson concentrated on the earlier March after disliking the newer car’s feel. Ickx retained pole ahead of Rodríguez and Stewart.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday wet-weather free practice

Persistent rain prompted an extra quarter-hour to assess the slippery surface. Teams concentrated on wet tyres and protecting electrics from water. Andretti then lost fuel pressure on the dummy grid, and hurried pump replacement left him joining the race late.

What happened in the 1971 Dutch Grand Prix?

Ickx and Rodríguez quickly escaped, their Firestone wet tyres providing a clear advantage. Stewart spun early and struggled for grip, while Amon slid into the barriers. Walker’s turbine Lotus also went off after he missed his braking point, ending an intriguing debut.

Rodríguez passed Ickx and the pair fought through traffic, repeatedly exchanging the advantage around half-distance. Ickx eventually pulled clear as Ferrari’s stronger low-speed response helped out of the hairpins. Behind them, Wisell was disqualified for reversing towards the pits and Stommelen for outside assistance.

Ickx won by just under eight seconds after an exceptional contest. Regazzoni recovered from a late excursion to finish third, followed by Peterson, Surtees and Siffert. Van Lennep impressed his home crowd with eighth on debut, while the championship-leading Tyrrells left without points.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 24 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 19. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 28, with Tyrrell – Ford on 24.
