Championship background
Jackie Stewart arrived at round 5 leading the 1971 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Jacky Ickx on 19. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 28 points.
Race entries
Fittipaldi returned with his ribs still heavily strapped after a road accident. Andretti was absent on American racing commitments, leaving Ferrari with Ickx and Regazzoni. March used Alfa Romeo power for Peterson and de Adamich, and François Mazet made his championship debut in a privately entered March.
Friday timed practice
Stewart headed the first official session at the new circuit, where many teams had already completed extensive testing. Tyrrell evaluated its enveloping nose and twin-disc front brakes. McLaren missed the day after its transporter broke down on the journey, immediately putting Hulme and Gethin behind in their preparation.
Saturday first timed practice
McLaren finally joined the running with both M19As, while teams continued adjusting cars to the long straight and slower sections. Stewart again set the pace. Tyrrell’s weekend development included reverting to conventional front brake discs after Stewart had spun; the spare car also suffered transmission trouble. Ferrari continued investigating rear-tyre vibration.
Saturday final qualifying
Stewart completed a clean sweep of the sessions and secured pole by a substantial margin. Regazzoni and Ickx occupied the rest of the front row, while Hill found a strong late lap to place the Brabham near the front after a frustrating build-up. An experimental starting-light procedure was tried, but the Grand Prix would begin with a conventional flag.

Sunday pre-race practice
A further short session allowed final checks before the 15:00 start. With the new circuit offering extensive run-off and a long straight, the weekend had placed particular emphasis on aerodynamic balance, braking and engine performance. The teams then prepared for 55 laps in fine weather.
What happened in the 1971 French Grand Prix?
Stewart led away and quickly established a commanding gap, setting fastest lap on the second tour. Regazzoni initially pursued him but crashed after encountering oil, while Rodríguez retired with an ignition problem. Cevert then moved into second, giving Tyrrell control of both leading positions.
Hill’s promising run ended with a broken oil pipe. Fittipaldi, still uncomfortable from his injuries, fought Siffert for third and ultimately secured the place. Amon and Schenken contested another points position until the Brabham ran short of oil late in the race.
Stewart won comfortably ahead of Cevert, with Fittipaldi, Siffert, Amon and Stommelen completing the points. It was Tyrrell’s first championship one-two. The event also proved to be Rodríguez’s final Formula One race; he died in a sports-car accident a week later.
After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 33 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 19. Tyrrell – Ford led the constructors’ table on 33, with Ferrari on 28.
