Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 14 leading the 1976 F1 World Championship on 64 points, with James Hunt on 47. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 76 points.
Race entries
Canada returned to the championship after its 1975 cancellation. Perkins joined the works Brabham team, and Amon attempted a return with Wolf-Williams. Lotus retained the 77 rather than introducing its new 78, experimenting with brush-like skirts beneath the existing cars. Ferrari brought Lauda and Regazzoni, with Reutemann already confirmed as Lauda’s partner for the following season.
Friday morning timed practice
Hunt quickly established himself among the leading runners, but several rivals lost valuable track time. Watson’s new Penske developed gearbox trouble and he reverted to his Austrian-winning car. Jarier suffered an engine failure, while Ickx’s Ensign also required an engine change. These interruptions were costly on a fast, demanding circuit where confidence through the sweeping corners mattered greatly.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Hunt’s strong run ended with smoke from an exhaust, allowing Brambilla to claim the day’s fastest time late on. Pryce slid into the pit wall after trying to overcome the new Shadow’s understeer, although the damage was limited. Amon spun while making room for another car and was then struck by Ertl’s independently spinning Hesketh. Both drivers suffered leg injuries and withdrew.
Saturday final qualifying
Hunt returned with a succession of faster laps and secured pole ahead of Peterson, Brambilla and Depailler. Lauda improved to sixth but remained dissatisfied with Ferrari’s handling over Mosport’s bumps. Watson’s new car developed a misfire, forcing another change that left him short of time. Perkins also changed Brabhams after further engine trouble.

Saturday untimed practice
Lotus faced a difficult evening after both drivers encountered trouble. Andretti lost a front wheel when a stub axle broke, while Nilsson went through the catch fencing. The mechanics had to repair the damage before race day. Ferrari had already revised its oil-cooler installation following a technical inspection, adding to its unsettled weekend.
What happened in the 1976 Canadian Grand Prix?
Peterson beat Hunt away from the start, but the March’s handling deteriorated and Hunt soon found a way past. Depailler and Andretti followed through as Peterson slipped backwards. Hunt then managed traffic effectively, preventing the pursuing Tyrrell from turning its strong pace into a successful attack.
Lauda ran fifth for much of the race before a rear-suspension link worked loose and upset the Ferrari’s handling. He slowed and finished eighth. Depailler’s challenge also weakened late on when a fuel leak into the cockpit made him unwell, although he retained second.
Hunt won ahead of Depailler, Andretti, Scheckter, Mass and Regazzoni. Regazzoni survived contact with Pace near the pit wall to claim the final point. Hunt’s victory reduced Lauda’s lead to eight points after the British appeal decision had increased it to seventeen before this race.
After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 64 points, followed by James Hunt on 56. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 77, with McLaren – Ford on 61.
