Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 15 leading the 1976 F1 World Championship on 64 points, with James Hunt on 56. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 77 points.

Race entries

Warwick Brown replaced the injured Amon at Wolf-Williams for his championship debut. Alex Ribeiro made his own debut in Edwards’ Hesketh, while Ertl attempted to race despite injuries from the Mosport practice accident. Laffite needed Ligier’s older chassis after damaging his newer car in pre-event testing.

Friday morning timed practice

Heavy rain left the circuit saturated and encouraged caution among the leading contenders. Stuck was conspicuously quick in the wet, but Pryce displaced him at the end of the session. Lauda also ran competitively. The conditions gave the field little useful indication of dry-weather form, and many drivers avoided unnecessary risks.

Friday afternoon timed practice

The surface dried enough for slicks, and Hunt took the fastest time ahead of Scheckter and Peterson. A compressed-air starter bottle fell from the McLaren and struck Depailler’s Tyrrell, damaging its front wheels; it also damaged Fittipaldi’s car. Nobody was injured. Watson changed Penskes after a hub-bearing problem, while Lauda remained unhappy with Ferrari’s handling.

Saturday rain-disrupted practice and qualifying

Torrential rain prevented the planned Saturday programme from proceeding normally. The organisers eventually offered an hour of running, but only Brambilla and Peterson ventured out. Brambilla returned after one lap; Peterson spun on the straight and damaged his nose. Friday’s dry times therefore settled the grid, with Hunt on pole. Stuppacher failed to qualify, while the organisers waived the event’s percentage-time requirement for slower qualifiers.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1976 United States Grand Prix?

Scheckter beat Hunt to the first corner and the pair quickly escaped the chasing field. Lauda fought through to third but could not match their pace. Hunt closed as the race developed, passed the Tyrrell, then briefly lost the lead after missing a gear while negotiating traffic. His second successful attack proved decisive.

Ickx suffered a heavy accident in the Ensign and was taken to hospital with injuries. Elsewhere, Peterson retired with damaged front suspension, Depailler stopped with a fuel-system problem and Laffite’s strong run ended when a rear tyre failed. Mass advanced into fourth and closed on Lauda without finding a way past.

Hunt won ahead of Scheckter, with Lauda retaining third under pressure from the second McLaren. Stuck and Fittipaldi completed the points positions. Ferrari had enough points to clinch the constructors’ title, but the drivers’ championship remained unresolved: Lauda led Hunt by just three points before the final round.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 68 points, followed by James Hunt on 65. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 81, with McLaren – Ford on 70.
