Racing career

Brown made one Formula One World Championship appearance, driving for Frank Williams Racing Cars at the United States Grand Prix on 10 October 1976.

The race at Watkins Glen became an exercise in mechanical survival. Brown lost third and fifth gears and also struggled with rear-brake trouble, yet managed to reach the finish. He placed 14th, five laps behind winner James Hunt.

Formula One was only a small part of Brown’s story. His best results came in the thunderous Chevrolet-powered Formula 5000 cars of the period.

Driving a Lola T332-Chevrolet, Brown won the 1975 Tasman Series and claimed victory in that year’s New Zealand Grand Prix. He then competed for Team VDS in Australia’s Rothmans International Series, securing consecutive championships.

The first came in 1977 with a Lola T430-Chevrolet, a season highlighted by victory in the Australian Grand Prix. Brown retained the Rothmans title in 1978 after returning to the Lola T332-Chevrolet.

His career also extended into North America. Brown contested the combined SCCA/USAC Formula 5000 Championship from 1974 through 1976 before moving into the revived Can-Am Series.

In 1978, he drove Team VDS’s Lola T333CS-Chevrolet to second place in the US Can-Am standings. The championship went to another Australian, future Formula One world champion Alan Jones.
