Jody Scheckter led Depailler home in a historic Tyrrell one-two at the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix. It was the first and only championship victory for a six-wheeled Formula One car. Andretti led much of the race on the road before retiring, while Lauda secured another valuable podium for Ferrari.

Championship background

Niki Lauda led the championship on 51 points at the time of this meeting, ahead of Clay Regazzoni on 15. The Spanish result remained subject to appeal; Hunt’s eventual reinstatement changed those totals retrospectively.

Race entries

Jac Nellemann joined the RAM-entered Brabham runners for his first championship qualifying attempt. The established teams arrived with Tyrrell’s P34 increasingly competitive and Lotus making progress with the 77. Penske brought its new car, while the revised chicane at Anderstorp altered the lap from the previous year.

Friday morning timed practice

Depailler headed a competitive opening session in which Tyrrell, Lotus and Ferrari all showed speed. Pryce crashed after a front-end failure and changed to Shadow’s spare. Scheckter lost one of the Tyrrell’s small front wheels but returned to the pits on the remaining five. Peterson’s long-wheelbase March experiment created cooling trouble, prompting the team to restore its shorter configuration during the break.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Lauda moved ahead of Andretti and Amon, but Regazzoni lost time with an oil leak after changing cars. Nilsson’s Lotus suffered persistent ignition problems, while Watson used Penske’s older car as the mechanics strengthened suspension mounting points on the new chassis. Pace complained of oil reaching the rear of his Brabham, illustrating the continuing difficulties of the Alfa-powered project.

Saturday untimed practice

Laffite bedded in a fresh engine and gearbox, and Scheckter experimented with Tyrrell’s air intake. Contact as the Tyrrell passed Reutemann sent the Brabham into a wall, damaging the car and hurting Reutemann’s hand. The session paused for recovery, and Brabham prepared its spare. Merzario also lost running while a failed rear hub bearing was replaced.

Saturday final qualifying

Scheckter secured pole, but Andretti’s front-row place required a rapid gearbox repair after third gear failed. Amon qualified an excellent third for Ensign, ahead of Depailler and Lauda. Nilsson recovered from ignition and suspension problems to take sixth with a late lap, shortly before his Lotus ran out of fuel.

Hunt struggled with rear-end grip and repeated spins, while Reutemann continued in the spare Brabham after his morning accident. Nellemann was the only driver to miss the 26-car grid. Tyrrell’s pace was clear, but Lotus and Ensign had ensured that the six-wheelers would face a genuine challenge.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix?

Andretti took the lead at the start but was penalised sixty seconds for moving too soon. He pressed on in an attempt to build a sufficient margin, with Scheckter and Depailler following. Amon also ran strongly before a suspension failure caused a heavy accident and ended Ensign’s hopes.

The leading Lotus eventually retired with engine failure. Scheckter and Depailler then controlled the race, turning Tyrrell’s qualifying promise into a one-two. Lauda moved into third and concentrated on securing another useful championship result rather than attempting to match the six-wheelers.

Scheckter took his second Swedish Grand Prix victory, with Depailler completing the P34’s finest result. Lauda finished third, followed by Laffite, Hunt and Regazzoni. The unusual design had now won on merit, while Ferrari’s champion continued accumulating points even on a weekend when his rivals held the advantage.

With subsequent result rulings applied, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 52 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 23. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 55, with Tyrrell – Ford on 31.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 7 from rounds 9–16. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables use the final adjudicated Spanish and British results; contemporary standings before the appeals were resolved differed.
