James Hunt took his first McLaren victory in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix, although the result was only restored after an appeal. He beat Niki Lauda on the road at Jarama, with Gunnar Nilsson claiming his first podium. Tyrrell’s six-wheeled P34 also made its championship debut.

Championship background
Niki Lauda arrived at round 4 leading the 1976 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Patrick Depailler on 10. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 27 points.
Race entries
Depailler drove Tyrrell’s new P34 while Scheckter retained the conventional 007. Ferrari introduced the 312T2, and Andretti returned to Lotus after Parnelli’s withdrawal. Boro entered Larry Perkins, RAM brought older Brabhams and Spanish private entrants Emilio de Villota and Emilio Zapico attempted to qualify. New bodywork rules came into force for this round, changing the appearance of several cars.
Friday morning timed practice
Hunt set the pace ahead of Lauda, who was driving with painful rib injuries from a tractor accident. Fittipaldi’s team arrived after transporter trouble, only for Hoffmann’s engine to fail almost immediately. Peterson suffered electrical trouble and a loose rear wing, while Stuck’s airbox also came adrift. Depailler’s six-wheeler showed encouraging cornering grip and Nilsson lifted Lotus’s spirits with a strong performance.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Hunt remained ahead as Mass moved closer to the front. Brabham had a difficult session: Pace’s engine faltered and Reutemann crashed, damaging his chassis and requiring the spare. Hoffmann’s replacement engine would not run properly, denying him a timed lap. Amon, meanwhile, produced an encouraging performance in Ensign’s new car.
Saturday untimed practice
The session began late while officials inspected the substantial wooden supports for the catch fencing. Fittipaldi then slid into that fencing, prompting a stoppage for repairs, while Hoffmann’s engine troubles continued. Scheckter tried the Tyrrell without its airbox, and Brambilla overshot the braking point at the end of the straight into the run-off area.
Saturday final qualifying
Hunt again headed the session, but his earlier time remained the pole-winning lap. Lauda joined him on the front row, and Depailler qualified the six-wheeler third. Laffite completed extensive, reliable running in the Ligier, while Perkins secured the last place for Boro after removing its airbox.
Scrutineering checked compliance with the new dimensions and cockpit-protection requirements. McLaren trimmed rear-wing endplates, and several teams modified their rollover protection before the race. Six entrants missed the 24-car grid, including both Spanish hopefuls and the repeatedly delayed Hoffmann.
Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.
Sunday warm-up
A final test session took place in warm sunshine before the late-afternoon race. The extended gap to the start gave the teams further preparation time. Fittipaldi’s difficulties were not finished: a brake-fluid leak discovered as he left the grid later forced a hurried switch to the spare car.
What happened in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix?
Lauda beat Hunt away and led the opening phase despite his rib pain. Depailler ran strongly before brake trouble sent the six-wheeled Tyrrell out. Hunt and Mass then passed Lauda, putting McLaren in position for a one-two until Mass’s engine failed late in the race.
Hunt crossed the line first, followed by Lauda and Nilsson. Post-race checks found the McLaren 1.5 centimetres wider than the permitted limit, and Hunt was disqualified. Laffite was also excluded for a rear-wing dimensional infringement. McLaren appealed Hunt’s decision, so the championship implications remained unresolved after the weekend.
The appeal in July restored Hunt as the winner, with Lauda second and Nilsson third in the final result. Reutemann, Amon and Pace completed the points. The classification and standings here use that final outcome, while retaining the distinction between what happened on the road and the provisional result announced at Jarama.
With subsequent result rulings applied, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by James Hunt on 15. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 33, with McLaren – Ford on 18.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 7 from rounds 9–16. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables use the final adjudicated Spanish and British results; contemporary standings before the appeals were resolved differed.
