Emilio Zapico

Emilio Rodríguez Zapico was a Spanish racing driver whose brief connection with Formula One came during one of the most difficult periods in Williams Grand Prix Engineering history. Although his Grand Prix career lasted just a single race weekend, Zapico remained an active competitor in Spanish motorsport for many years afterwards.

Racing career

Zapico’s sole Formula One appearance came at the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix, where he entered with the struggling Frank Williams Racing Cars team. The machinery available to him reflected the team’s financial and competitive difficulties at the time—he drove an ageing Williams FW04 chassis that was already a year old by the standards of rapidly evolving Formula One technology.

Despite his efforts, Zapico failed to qualify for the race. The same FW04 would later pass into the hands of fellow privateer Brian McGuire.

Though Formula One did not lead to a longer international career, Zapico continued racing in touring cars during the 1980s, remaining involved in Spain’s domestic motorsport scene before eventually retiring from competition.

Death

Zapico died on 6 August 1996 in Huete, Spain, when the ultralight aircraft he was piloting crashed.
