Jackie Stewart swept to victory at Silverstone, leaving Ronnie Peterson and Emerson Fittipaldi to complete the podium. Ferrari and BRM briefly challenged, but Stewart’s pace and Tyrrell’s reliability made the British Grand Prix another major step towards the championship.

Championship background
Jackie Stewart arrived at round 6 leading the 1971 F1 World Championship on 33 points, with Jacky Ickx on 19. Tyrrell – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 33 points.
Race entries
BRM raced in mourning after Pedro Rodríguez’s death, fielding Siffert and Ganley. Lotus put Wisell in the turbine car and Charlton in a 72, while McLaren added Oliver. Beuttler made his championship debut in a March, Bell drove a Surtees and Galli took over Soler-Roig’s works March seat.
Thursday first timed practice
Stewart and Regazzoni established the leading contest during the short opening periods. Teams had little time for major adjustments, making reliability particularly important. Ferrari compared new nose bodywork and intake arrangements, while both Tyrrells used the broader nose design that had worked well in France.
Thursday second timed practice
Fittipaldi remained close to the leaders, but Lotus’ preparations were disrupted by cracking engine mountings associated with vibration. Charlton’s car required more extensive work. Siffert’s troubled practice programme included spare-car running, while McLaren briefly evaluated an alternative nose and Matra struggled to recover its earlier testing pace.
Friday first timed practice
Regazzoni set the 1:18.1 that ultimately secured pole. Surtees tested the newer car before handing it to Bell, while Lotus continued strengthening Fittipaldi’s machine. Pescarolo’s damaged March also needed repairs after a rear-upright failure, keeping the smaller Williams team busy.
Friday final qualifying
Stewart matched Regazzoni’s time but could not beat it, leaving the Ferrari on pole. Siffert finally had his BRM working properly and joined them on the front row. Fittipaldi returned just before the session ended after repairs, confirming that Lotus remained competitive despite its lost running.

Saturday untimed practice
An untimed session preceded the race-day programme and the scheduled 14:30 start. The final reconnaissance lap then exposed an engine problem in Charlton’s Lotus, which failed as the start approached. Wisell brought the turbine car to the grid, adding an unusual note to the conventional field.
What happened in the 1971 British Grand Prix?
A confused start saw Oliver collide with Hill and eliminate both cars. Regazzoni initially led, but Stewart quickly passed the Ferraris and began pulling away. Siffert reached second before vibration loosened his ignition coil, while Peterson, Schenken and Fittipaldi fought closely behind.
Tyre and engine problems ended Ferrari’s challenge, and Siffert lost further time in the pits. Peterson inherited second, with Schenken on course for a fine podium until his transmission failed near the finish. Fittipaldi then moved into third.
Stewart won convincingly from Peterson and Fittipaldi. Pescarolo narrowly beat Stommelen for fourth, with Surtees taking the final point. The result rewarded the survivors, but Stewart’s superiority had been clear long before attrition reshaped the positions behind him.
After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 19. Tyrrell – Ford led the constructors’ table on 42, with Ferrari on 28.
