Championship background

Jackie Stewart arrived at round 10 leading the 1971 F1 World Championship on 51 points, with Ronnie Peterson on 23. Tyrrell – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 55 points.

Race entries

Donohue drove a Penske-entered McLaren alongside the works effort. BRM expanded to five cars, including Eaton and Marko, and Beltoise returned to Matra. Craft appeared with an independently entered Brabham but did not start after engine trouble. Lovely’s hybrid Lotus was among the additional entries.

Friday first practice

The day began damp before the track dried, giving newcomers an opportunity to learn Mosport’s blind crests and changing gradients. Stewart and Siffert emerged as the principal contenders across practice. Goodyear’s new compound helped its runners, while tyre vibration remained visible through the final corner in front of the pits.

Friday second practice

Regazzoni damaged the front of his newer Ferrari and switched to the spare. Pescarolo’s preparations were repeatedly interrupted by engine failures, leaving Williams searching for another unit. Donohue built speed progressively, while the large BRM entry required careful management of cars and running time.

Saturday first timed practice

Stewart used the older Tyrrell while the newer car received gearbox attention, and Siffert moved into provisional pole. Fine weather allowed consistent running. Cevert remained close to the leaders, while a crowded group behind them was separated by only fractions of a second.

Saturday final qualifying

Stewart returned to set 1:15.3 and reclaim pole from Siffert. Cevert was the only other driver below 1:16, and Donohue earned a strong place among the established runners. The qualifying arrangements had nominally guaranteed 22 entrants a start, with others competing for the remaining places, but subsequent withdrawals changed the final field.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday shakedown and delayed wet running

Pescarolo crashed during the half-hour morning shakedown and injured his neck, preventing him from starting. A fatal accident in the supporting Formula Ford race then delayed the Grand Prix by two hours. Drivers were allowed several wet acclimatisation laps before the delayed start; Ganley crashed, Hill needed hurried repairs and Craft’s engine trouble prevented his debut.

What happened in the 1971 Canadian Grand Prix?

Stewart led through the spray, but Peterson recovered second from Beltoise and began a sustained pursuit. Beltoise later crashed while trying to lap traffic, promoting Donohue. Peterson passed Stewart and held the lead for a spell before the champion fought back.

After Stewart retook first, Peterson damaged his front wing in contact with Eaton while lapping him. The March’s handling suffered and the gap widened, although Peterson kept second. Donohue continued steadily, while Hulme recovered to fourth and set fastest lap.

Mist increasingly obscured the circuit, and officials stopped the race after 64 of the planned 80 laps. Stewart won from Peterson and Donohue, with Hulme, Wisell and Cevert completing the points. Full championship points were awarded for the shortened event.

After the race, Jackie Stewart headed the drivers’ standings with 60 points, followed by Ronnie Peterson on 29. Tyrrell – Ford led the constructors’ table on 64, with Ferrari on 32.
