Jody Scheckter gave Wolf its second victory of the season in the 1977 Monaco Grand Prix. He beat pole-sitter John Watson away from the start and resisted the Brabham’s pressure before a late fuel-system scare threatened his afternoon. Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann completed the podium for Ferrari.

Championship background
Jody Scheckter arrived at round 6 leading the 1977 F1 World Championship on 23 points, with Mario Andretti on 20. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 34 points.
Race entries
Riccardo Patrese made his Grand Prix debut with Shadow, replacing Renzo Zorzi. McLaren returned to the established M23 for James Hunt, while Tyrrell revised its six-wheelers towards their earlier specification. Clay Regazzoni’s Indianapolis commitments brought another change during the weekend: Jacky Ickx took over the Ensign for final qualifying.
Thursday morning timed practice
Brabham immediately found a rhythm on the crowded streets. Hans-Joachim Stuck edged Watson by 0.13 seconds, while Ronnie Peterson also looked comfortable in the Tyrrell. Lauda broke a driveshaft and continued in the spare Ferrari; Jacques Laffite struggled with a Ligier that refused to respond to adjustments. Patrese settled impressively into his first Formula One weekend despite the unforgiving setting.
Thursday afternoon timed practice
Rain arrived as the session began and soon removed any chance of improving the morning’s grid times. Some teams rehearsed wheel changes while others abandoned running. Mario Andretti tried both Lotus cars and was quickest among those venturing out, but worsening rain eventually brought meaningful activity to an end. Regazzoni, still outside the qualifying places, could not secure his Monaco start before leaving for Indianapolis.
Saturday untimed practice
The weather improved during the morning, giving the teams useful dry running before final qualifying. Andretti sampled a development Cosworth engine in the spare Lotus while the team refined his race car. Rupert Keegan’s Hesketh leaked oil onto its rear tyres and spun without serious damage. March had already lost its works pair: Alex Ribeiro’s damaged car could not be repaired in time, and Ian Scheckter withdrew with injured ribs.
Saturday final qualifying
Watson delivered the decisive lap late in the final hour, becoming the only driver below 1min 30sec and claiming his first pole. Jody Scheckter qualified second ahead of Reutemann and Peterson. Stuck suffered an engine failure and could not improve his Thursday time, leaving him fifth.
The session brought considerable repair work. Andretti hit the barriers after encountering oil from Keegan’s car, while Scheckter damaged the rear of the Wolf in a separate accident. Ickx qualified the Ensign, but all four March entries and Harald Ertl’s Hesketh missed the 20-car field.

What happened in the 1977 Monaco Grand Prix?
Watson suffered wheelspin at the start and Scheckter seized the lead. The Brabham stayed close enough to keep the Wolf under constant pressure, while Reutemann initially led the pursuit. Peterson lost his brakes, Stuck retired and Lauda moved ahead of his teammate to take third. Hunt’s engine failure removed another potential challenger.
Watson’s challenge unravelled as brake and transmission trouble developed. An excursion cost him second place, then his gearbox locked and spun the Brabham out of the race. Lauda inherited second, with Reutemann third. Jochen Mass kept Andretti behind him, while Alan Jones moved into the final points position as others dropped out.
Scheckter still had a late problem to solve when his fuel supply began faltering. Switching on the auxiliary pump allowed him to maintain his pace and finish ahead of Lauda, whose Ferrari was developing oversteer. Reutemann completed Ferrari’s double podium, followed by Mass, Andretti and Jones. Patrese finished ninth on debut, while Wolf celebrated the Cosworth DFV’s 100th World Championship victory.
After the race, Jody Scheckter headed the drivers’ standings with 32 points, followed by Niki Lauda on 25. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 40, with Wolf – Ford on 32.
