Championship background

Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 8 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 43 points, with Jackie Stewart on 27. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 43 points.

Race entries

Regazzoni returned from his wrist injury alongside Ickx and Merzario. Redman replaced Revson at McLaren again, while Tyrrell brought repaired older cars rather than its new 005. The Connew team arrived hoping to participate but was refused permission to run. The intended 25-car field was later expanded to admit Charlton and Beuttler without starting money.

Friday first timed practice

Stewart set the pace, but a shower on part of the circuit caught out Walker and Merzario, leaving both teams with repairs. Beltoise switched to the spare BRM after a fuel leak was discovered. The short session gave drivers only limited opportunities on the long lap, making every clear run valuable.

Friday second timed practice

Ickx raised the standard dramatically, exploiting Ferrari’s revised rear suspension. Cevert crashed at Pflanzgarten and Redman hit the barriers near the start of a lap, adding two more substantial rebuilding jobs. Timing corrections complicated the published order, while Regazzoni’s return was interrupted by an oil leak and engine trouble.

Saturday final qualifying

Ickx secured pole with a superb 7:07.0, ahead of Stewart and Fittipaldi. Cevert used the spare Tyrrell while his usual car was repaired, and Lauda missed running because of a fuel-system fault. Debris destroyed a rear tyre on Hulme’s McLaren, causing another repair job. Charlton and Beuttler were initially outside the permitted field before agreement allowed both to start.

Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

Sunday short-loop free practice

Early running on the short pits loop allowed Cevert to check his rebuilt Tyrrell and Lauda to test the repaired fuel system. Later, Amon’s Matra lost ignition on the full reconnaissance lap. Repairs kept him in the pits as the rest of the field started, leaving him well behind before his race had properly begun.

What happened in the 1972 German Grand Prix?

Ickx immediately broke clear while Peterson, Regazzoni, Fittipaldi and Stewart disputed the next positions. Fittipaldi eventually reached second, but Ickx continued lowering the lap record and maintained control. Reutemann’s promising run ended with transmission trouble, while Hailwood and Hulme also retired.

Fittipaldi’s gearbox failed spectacularly, removing the championship leader. Peterson’s earlier spin had allowed Regazzoni and Stewart through, and those two fought for second until they collided on the final lap. Stewart’s Tyrrell was damaged, while Regazzoni continued.

Ickx completed his eighth and final World Championship victory despite a late exhaust problem. Regazzoni secured Ferrari’s one-two, Peterson took third, and Ganley, Redman and Hill completed the points. It was Ferrari’s only championship win of the season and a particularly emphatic demonstration of Ickx’s skill at the Nürburgring.

After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 43 points, followed by Jackie Stewart on 27. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 43, with Tyrrell – Ford on 33.
