Emerson Fittipaldi made Nivelles his own on the Belgian Grand Prix’s first visit to the circuit. Pole position became a convincing victory, with François Cevert second for Tyrrell in the absence of Jackie Stewart and Denny Hulme completing the podium.

Championship background
Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 5 leading the 1972 F1 World Championship on 19 points, with Jacky Ickx on 16. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 19 points.
Race entries
Stewart missed the race on medical advice, leaving Cevert to represent Tyrrell. Reutemann returned despite his recent ankle injury and a damaged finger. Tecno made its championship debut with Nanni Galli and its own flat-12 engine, while BRM’s available drivers and cars changed as practice problems developed.
Friday timed practice
Fittipaldi gradually displaced the Ferraris at the top as drivers learned Nivelles. Amon’s Matra engine failed before the session was half over, while Gethin crashed his BRM and triggered a reshuffle of the team’s cars. Galli explored the Tecno’s handling limits, including an excursion onto the grass, and Pace impressed in Williams’ older March.
Saturday first timed practice
Fittipaldi maintained his advantage as the teams refined their cars for the new circuit. The afternoon was divided into two periods, providing time for adjustments between runs. Several leading drivers also used spare cars, although the contemporary report criticised the published timing for failing to distinguish all of those laps clearly.
Saturday final qualifying
Fittipaldi secured pole with 1:11.43 and also spent time guiding Walker around to improve his team-mate’s pace. Hulme moved into third behind Regazzoni as conditions warmed, while Cevert placed the sole Tyrrell fifth. Reutemann’s return and Pace’s efforts further back gave their teams encouragement despite Lotus’ clear advantage.

Sunday untimed practice
Lotus elected not to run either car in the additional Sunday morning session, satisfied with its preparations. BRM’s mechanics faced a much busier morning getting their available cars ready. The field subsequently completed a warm-up lap before the scheduled 15:30 start.
What happened in the 1972 Belgian Grand Prix?
Regazzoni led away as Fittipaldi struggled for traction on the dusty inside of the grid. The Lotus driver studied his rival before passing on lap nine, then steadily built a commanding lead. Revson and de Adamich needed early repairs after contact, while Reutemann lost time with his gear linkage.
Cevert advanced into second as Ferrari’s challenge unravelled. Ickx suffered throttle-linkage trouble, and Regazzoni collided with Galli’s Tecno while lapping traffic. Amon ran strongly until a late fuel stop cost him places, helping Hulme secure third.
Fittipaldi controlled the closing stages to win from Cevert and Hulme. Hailwood finished fourth, while Pace’s persistent pursuit through traffic earned fifth in the Williams March. Amon recovered sixth, with Revson just outside the points after an impressive recovery from his opening-lap delay.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 28 points, followed by Denny Hulme on 19. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 28, with McLaren – Ford on 23.
