Championship background
Ferrari returned to Monza with Regazzoni at the head of the title contest, but Fittipaldi and Scheckter remained serious threats. The British Grand Prix appeal had not yet restored Lauda’s two points; that ruling came before Canada.
Race entries
BRM returned to three drivers, with Pescarolo in a new P201 alongside Beltoise and Migault. Dolhem rejoined Bell at Surtees, and Facetti attempted to qualify a private Brabham. Hobbs continued for the injured Hailwood. Lotus brought two 76s and only one older 72, hoping to establish the newer car as its race choice.
Friday first timed practice
Reutemann and Lauda set the early standard, with Ferrari and Brabham visibly well suited to the fast circuit. Scheckter felt unwell and also suffered fluctuating fuel pressure, briefly trying Tyrrell’s spare. Lotus struggled to find comparable speed in the 76, while the modified Ascari section allowed faster exits than the previous year.
Friday second timed practice
Peterson returned to the Lotus 72 as the newer car failed to meet expectations. Stuck crashed after a nose-cone mounting broke, escaping injury but leaving March with substantial repairs. Reutemann improved to 1:33.27 and ended Friday ahead of the Ferraris. Watson steadily improved in his privately run Brabham, benefiting from help from the works team.
Saturday first timed practice
An overnight storm cleared the air before another hot day. Hobbs crashed at the pit-straight chicane, briefly interrupting practice while his McLaren was recovered. Stuck’s repaired March then suffered a driveshaft failure. Lauda moved to 1:33.16, taking provisional pole, while Pace and Fittipaldi also joined the fastest group.
Saturday final qualifying
Watson secured an excellent fourth place before a rear-wheel failure sent his Brabham into a heavy accident. He escaped injury, and the works team offered its spare for the race. Lauda retained pole ahead of Reutemann and Pace. Peterson tried the 76 once more but remained quicker in the 72. Six drivers missed the 25-car grid, including both Surtees entries.

Sunday warm-up
Sunday’s untimed half-hour gave Watson a chance to adapt to the loaned works Brabham, now running on Goodyears instead of his usual Firestones. Lauda could also check the replacement engine installed overnight. Watson’s limited time in the car left its brake balance less settled than he would have liked.
What happened in the 1974 Italian Grand Prix?
Lauda led from the start, and Regazzoni quickly passed the Brabhams to make it a Ferrari one-two. Reutemann retired with gearbox trouble, while Watson dropped back with braking difficulties. Peterson and Fittipaldi became the leading pursuers as the Ferraris pulled clear.
Lauda’s engine began smoking and failed, handing the lead to Regazzoni. The second Ferrari then developed the same symptoms and retired. Fittipaldi briefly passed Peterson at the chicane but could not hold the advantage, leaving the Lotus ahead as the pair inherited the battle for victory.
Peterson held on for his third win of the season, with Fittipaldi close behind. Scheckter finished third, Merzario fourth and Pace fifth after recovering from a tyre stop and damaged rear anti-roll-bar mounting. Hulme took sixth. Ferrari left its home race without points after having controlled much of the afternoon.
With subsequent result rulings applied, Clay Regazzoni headed the drivers’ standings with 46 points, followed by Jody Scheckter on 45. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 61, with Ferrari on 59.

Drivers counted their best 7 results from rounds 1–8 and their best 6 from rounds 9–15. Only the highest-placed car for each constructor could score constructor points, with the same dropped-results limits applying. These tables include Lauda’s British Grand Prix fifth place, restored on appeal before the Canadian round; contemporary standings before the ruling differed.
