Championship background
Clay Regazzoni arrived at round 4 leading the 1974 F1 World Championship on 10 points, with Carlos Reutemann on 9. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 22 points.
Race entries
Von Opel replaced Robarts at Brabham, while Amon and Trojan made their championship debuts as constructors. Scheckter received Tyrrell’s new 007, and Shadow returned with Jarier after withdrawing from South Africa. The large entry faced a 25-car starting limit, making reliable practice running particularly important for the smaller teams.
Friday first timed practice
Lauda immediately set the standard in a new Ferrari chassis. Von Opel’s engine spread oil across the circuit, Brambilla spun and Hulme went off while trying to avoid the trouble, striking a marshal before hitting the barrier. Hulme continued in McLaren’s spare. Engine failures also delayed Hill and Migault, with BRM unable to provide an immediate replacement car.
Friday second timed practice
Peterson briefly put Lotus ahead of Ferrari, but the new car remained far from fully sorted. Ickx’s running ended when second gear failed. Hunt evaluated experimental brake discs in the latest Hesketh, while the tight circuit encouraged aggressive driving from Stuck and Jarier. Frequent traffic and short sessions left little room for extended development work.
Saturday morning timed practice
Scheckter’s new Tyrrell suffered a failure in its inboard front-brake drive and he changed cars. Amon’s new chassis overheated and ran with its radiator shrouds removed. Ferrari continued to look composed, while its rivals divided their attention between finding speed and keeping unfamiliar or troublesome machinery running.
Saturday final qualifying
Brambilla crashed heavily and damaged his March beyond repair. Beltoise, Depailler and Migault also went off, creating further interruptions and an enormous repair workload. Heavy traffic frustrated the final attempts. Lauda secured pole beside Peterson, while Edwards and Belsø failed to qualify. BRM rebuilt Migault’s car overnight rather than surrender his starting place.

Each driver’s best eligible practice lap determined the qualifying order.

What happened in the 1974 Spanish Grand Prix?
Rain accompanied the start and Peterson led the Ferraris away. As the circuit dried, the timing and execution of the switch to slick tyres became decisive. Ferrari completed Lauda’s stop efficiently, allowing him to move ahead as the field changed tyres.
Lauda established control and Regazzoni followed him into second. The Lotus challenge faded, while Merzario lost a strong points opportunity against the barriers. Fittipaldi resisted Stuck’s pressure for third, and Scheckter worked towards his first championship points.
The two-hour limit ended the race after 84 of the scheduled 90 laps. Lauda and Regazzoni were the only drivers on the lead lap, followed by Fittipaldi, Stuck, Scheckter and Hulme. Ferrari had converted its promising early-season pace into a decisive result and ended the long run of championship victories by Ford-powered cars.
After the race, Clay Regazzoni headed the drivers’ standings with 16 points, followed by Niki Lauda on 15. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 26, with Ferrari on 21.
