Championship background

Emerson Fittipaldi arrived at round 15 leading the 1974 F1 World Championship on 52 points, with Clay Regazzoni on 52. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 70 points.

Race entries

Fittipaldi and Regazzoni arrived level on 52 points, with Scheckter seven behind. Schenken joined Lotus in the 76, while Dolhem replaced Bell at Surtees. Parnelli and Penske made their first home championship appearances. Ferrari had replaced the car Regazzoni damaged in testing, and McLaren fitted radio equipment to help manage the title decider. This would be Hulme’s final Grand Prix.

Friday first timed practice

Reutemann set a strong early benchmark, but Beltoise crashed on the cold, dirty track and injured his ankle. Ferrari struggled with understeer and damper problems, while Lotus also found its cars reluctant to turn. Donohue’s Penske suffered a persistent misfire that was eventually traced to a loose battery earth connection.

Friday second timed practice

Andretti put the Parnelli fastest, a remarkable performance in only the new constructor’s second Grand Prix. Reutemann remained close, while Ferrari’s difficulties continued and Regazzoni suffered an engine failure. Fittipaldi needed brake work, using components from the spare McLaren, as the championship contenders worked to improve their positions.

Saturday first timed practice

Reutemann raised the pace, while Scheckter had to use Tyrrell’s spare after an engine failure. The Brabham looked composed on the circuit’s demanding sequence of corners, in contrast to the continued handling difficulties at Lotus. Hunt also emerged as a front-row contender, giving Hesketh a strong opportunity to finish the season well.

Saturday final qualifying

Andretti’s bid to regain pole was interrupted by a brake-related accident that damaged the Parnelli’s front suspension and steering. Repairs allowed only a brief late return, leaving him third behind Reutemann and Hunt. Scheckter qualified sixth, Fittipaldi eighth and Regazzoni ninth. Dolhem was first reserve, while Schenken failed to qualify the third Lotus.

Qualifying Classification

Dolhem was subsequently allowed to start as first reserve. Schenken also joined the race without qualifying and was disqualified. Andretti’s separate disqualification followed assistance to start his stalled car after the race had begun.

Dolhem was allowed to start at the back of the grid despite failing to qualify in the top 25 as “first reserve”.

Schenken had illegally started at the back of the grid after failing to qualify.

What happened in the 1974 United States Grand Prix?

Andretti’s ignition trouble delayed the start, and the Parnelli then remained stationary as the field departed. Reutemann led Hunt and Pace, while Regazzoni immediately struggled with his Ferrari’s handling. Andretti eventually got going with assistance and was black-flagged.

Koinigg suffered a fatal accident during the opening part of the race when his Surtees struck a barrier. The race continued, but Surtees later withdrew Dolhem. Ferrari’s championship challenge unravelled as both cars suffered handling and damper problems. Scheckter held Fittipaldi behind him until a fuel-feed failure ended the Tyrrell’s race.

Reutemann remained in control, and Pace passed Hunt late on to complete a Brabham one-two. Fittipaldi’s fourth place secured the drivers’ title and McLaren’s first constructors’ championship. Watson and Depailler completed the points. Hulme retired with engine trouble in his final Grand Prix; the sporting achievements of the afternoon were inevitably tempered by Koinigg’s death.

After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 55 points, followed by Clay Regazzoni on 52. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 73, with Ferrari on 65.
