Championship background
Clay Regazzoni arrived at round 14 leading the 1974 F1 World Championship on 46 points, with Jody Scheckter on 45. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 61 points.
Race entries
Parnelli and Penske made their Formula One constructor debuts, with Andretti returning to the championship and Donohue coming back from retirement. Mass replaced Hobbs in the Yardley McLaren, Koinigg joined Surtees and Amon moved to BRM alongside Beltoise. Wietzes returned in a private Brabham, while Ashley also switched from Token to Brabham. Before the meeting, Lauda’s appeal over the British Grand Prix had restored him to fifth there.
Friday morning timed practice
Pace and Reutemann led the opening 90 minutes, with Regazzoni matching the second Brabham’s time. Ickx damaged his Lotus 72 and then lost time to a sticking brake on the spare 76. Jarier suffered engine trouble, while Andretti made an encouraging start in the Parnelli despite difficulty warming its tyres in the cool conditions.
Friday afternoon timed practice
Ferrari moved to the top, Lauda leading Regazzoni as both reached the 1:13 bracket. The demanding, uneven circuit rewarded commitment but also exposed handling weaknesses. Amon found the BRM difficult to drive, while Lotus remained well short of the pace that had brought Peterson victory at Monza.
Saturday first timed practice
Donohue’s Penske developed fuel-pressure trouble after only a few laps. Replacing a broken pump belt did not cure it, and further repairs consumed most of the day. Peterson waited for an engine oil-seal repair, Ickx had fuel-pressure problems and Bell’s Surtees suffered an engine-related setback. Andretti continued improving, while the newer teams learned the demands of their first Grand Prix weekend.
Saturday final qualifying
Scheckter, Lauda and Fittipaldi traded increasingly quick laps before Fittipaldi secured pole with 1:13.18. Rain then removed the chance of a response. Regazzoni crashed the spare Ferrari at the first corner as the surface became slippery, and Brambilla also damaged his March during Saturday’s running. The organisers allowed local entrant Wietzes to start, enlarging the grid to 27.

What happened in the 1974 Canadian Grand Prix?
The race began more than an hour late after delays to the supporting programme. Lauda beat Fittipaldi away, with Regazzoni and Scheckter following. Scheckter soon took third and pursued the leaders, but a front-brake failure later sent his Tyrrell into the barriers and ended his afternoon.
Peterson recovered strongly from his midfield grid position, passing Hunt and pressuring Regazzoni. Ahead, Lauda appeared set to win until he encountered dirt and debris left by Watson’s troubled Brabham and slid into the barriers. Fittipaldi negotiated the same corner safely and inherited the lead.
Fittipaldi took a crucial victory, while Regazzoni narrowly resisted Peterson for second. Hunt, Depailler and Hulme completed the points, with Andretti just behind Hulme on Parnelli’s debut. The championship would be settled at Watkins Glen, with Fittipaldi and Regazzoni tied and Scheckter still mathematically in contention.
After the race, Emerson Fittipaldi headed the drivers’ standings with 52 points, followed by Clay Regazzoni on 52. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 70, with Ferrari on 65.
